Duck Dynasty stars Willie and Korie Robertson have been sharing the secrets of a happy marriage after being husband and wife for over three decades.
The couple opened up about their relationship in a recent interview with Fox News Digital, explaining how they’ve built their marriage on patience, kindness, grace, and faith. One important aspect they shared is that they try to resolve conflicts before they fester.
“Not going to bed while you’re angry,” Willie said when sharing advice for a strong relationship. “I mean, these are just things that you put into your life and say, ‘Oh, this is helpful.’ And so I think that’s part of things we do to keep drawn together and keep being together on the same page.”
The reality star noted that he and Korie have also picked up dos and don’ts from other successful and unsuccessful relationships.
“We’ve had great examples of that in our families, from our parents to other people to where we see how that works,” he explained. “We also see things that don’t, and we see people that can get themselves in a bad way, and then their marriage falls apart. And we’ve seen that.”
He continued, “Not just in Hollywood or people that we know that are famous. We see it up and down our street here, you know, like, like you don’t have to be bad to start bickering with each other and fighting and let things go in.”
The couple, who married in 1992 and share six children, actually met as elementary school students at a Christian summer camp in Louisiana. However, despite being from the same area, Willie and Korie shared very different upbringings.
“I grew up in a neighborhood. I was a yuppie,” Korie said.
Willie added, “I grew up really poor on the end of a dead-end dirt road.”
“I think for us, it’s like the externals did look very different growing up,” Korie shared. “We definitely looked very different. His dad had a big beard and wore camo, and my dad actually had a little beard. It was a manicured beard and wore a suit, you know?”
Even though they looked different on the outside, Korie explained that they shared many of the same values. “And so from the externals, it looked different, but the things that were important actually looked the same,” she said. “Faith first and foremost, hospitality, generosity, kindness to strangers are to your neighbor. Like, those things.”
Willie also said he believed their different backgrounds and skills helped strengthen their marriage and business partnership. “Actually, it has been helpful,” he stated. “You think about all the stuff men ever do, like the perspective I have of country people, poor people, you know. Like that’s how I grew up.”
“You come from a business world where your family was successful in business,” he told Korie. “You had to figure out how to build things, build businesses, build retail business. So I think when you bring that together, it’s powerful.”
