Dua Lipa and Callum Turner put their week in N.Y.C. to good use.
The singer, 30, and actor, 36, stopped at Corner Bistro, a restaurant in the West Village, on Sunday, July 19 and serenaded another customer for her birthday, the restaurant’s bartender tells PEOPLE.
Tyler, who requested to go by his first name, said the newlyweds came in on July 19 after watching the World Cup final in New Jersey and ordered drinks at the bar with a group of friends before sitting outside.
Then, “I think they kind of saw someone, a group of friends singing happy birthday, and I think they kind of thought it would be fun to join in, pop over, join in on the singing, make someone’s day,” he shares.
The restaurant shared a video on its Instagram of the moment when the couple joined a group singing happy birthday to a woman sitting at a table outside. Lipa and Turner excitedly held their hands out towards the woman as they sang her name and cheered after the song.
“Some birthdays come with cake. @maireadwalshh ‘s came with a surprise serenade from @dualipa & Callum Turner 🎂🎶,” the restaurant wrote in its caption.
Lipa and Turner are semi-regular visitors to the bar, Tyler shares.
“I think Callum had come in a few times and liked my martinis and eventually came in with Dua and had martinis,” he says. “I think they liked the vibe, Corner Bistro vibe.”
Corner Bistro is a “bohemian bar” with locations in the West and East Village neighborhoods of New York City, according to its website.
Other than its martinis, the restaurant serves up classic bistro foods like a half-pound Bistro Burger, tater tots and fries.
“The original ambience is pretty much unchanged” since its opening, the restaurant said on its website, “And we like to keep it that way.”
“We see a lot of different people, a lot of celebrities come in, but it doesn’t really phase us,” Tyler explains. “It’s just like another day, we try to treat everybody the same.”
Of Lipa and Turner, he says, “I think they like the low-key, to feel low-key.”
“They just want to be able to go out and enjoy a drink and a bite…just like anybody else, so I think they like to feel low-key, and most of our clientele leave them be,” he says.
Lipa shared an Instagram post with photos from her time in New York City, including images of her at the World Cup final, featuring one of Turner with his arm around her, and a photo of her pizza from West Village hotspot L’Industrie.
“A week in the 212,” she captioned the post.
The couple got married earlier this summer, first in an intimate ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall in London on May 31, then in a big second ceremony surrounded by starry friends in Italy on June 6.
Per Vanity Fair, the second event was catered by chef Tony Lo Coco.
Following the first ceremony, British Vogue reshared a clip of Lipa starring in the outlet’s “Now Serving” series, in which she shared her favorite thing that Turner cooks for her.
She said her favorite thing “Cal” makes for her is breakfast, which he does “really well.”
“We have this thing called Cal’s caff,” she shared.
“So you’re going to get the crumpet, with the butter and the Marmite and the eggs and bacon, sausage, tomatoes, mushrooms, avocado, whatever,” she said. “Cal’s caff, 10 out of 10 experience.”
In the original British Vogue video, Lipa said, “I think both me and Callum would say that I’m the best chef, but he’s sous chef.”
She added, “He helps me around the kitchen all the time, so we would make everything together, but I think I would take the lead.”
In rare comments about his now-wife, Turner shared in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on June 10 that she inspires him artistically.
“You want to be inspired by the person you’re with,” he said.
He shared how the pair have made their relationship work amid their demanding careers.
“We make sure that we’re together as much as possible,” he said.
He also said that the pair have taken in movies together recently, like going to the theater to see Obsession and watching one of his favorite movies, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
