Ultra Instinct is Goku's ultimate transformation in Dragon Ball Super, and perhaps the form in the franchise with the most potential for growth. Since the Tournament of Power, Goku's mastery of Ultra Instinct has evolved to help him fight and even beat villains stronger than the Gods. Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol will feature Ultra Instinct Goku's greatest animated battle to date, with more amazing bouts to come in the rest of Dragon Ball Super 2.
Part of what makes every Ultra Instinct fight such a spectacle lies in how Goku uses the form. Ultra Instinct is all about bringing Goku back to basics, prioritizing skill and strategy over raw strength. Goku's best Ultra Instinct fights pit him against warriors he needs to outsmart and outperform to defeat – all while using his most powerful abilities to their fullest. Goku doesn't always win, even with Ultra Instinct on his side, but that just makes these divine battles all the more exciting to behold.
Kefla Would Have Eliminated Universe 7 if Goku Didn't Trigger Ultra Instinct
Kefla is much stronger in the Dragon Ball Super anime than in Toyotarou’s manga, where her Power Level only rivaled Ultimate Gohan. In the anime, Caulifla unlocked Super Saiyan 2 by being coached by Goku, which means Kefla can use Legendary Super Saiyan 2. The anime version of Kefla is a powerful, fast, and dangerous warrior who would came close to defeating Goku before he ever got his rematch with Jiren.
Legendary Super Saiyan 2 Kefla is so strong, in fact, Goku ends up triggering Ultra Instinct Sign just like when Jiren pushed the Spirit Bomb back into him. Even fighting with Ultra Instinct Sign, Goku cannot brute force his way into beating Kefla. Instead, he wins by outsmarting her and using his mix of Angelic reflexes and martial arts know-ho to counter her strongest attack, eliminating her in the process.
Jiren Was the First Opponent Strong Enough to Awaken Ultra Instinct in Goku
Jiren is the whole reason Goku even has access to Ultra Instinct. During the Tournament of Power, Goku quickly realizes that he’ll need to break his limits if he's going to defeat the strongest warrior in Universe 11 – and who was quite possibly the most powerful mortal in the multiverse at the time. In the Dragon Ball Super anime, Ultra Instinct proves to be exactly what Goku needs to cut the difference between himself Jiren, briefly giving him enough power to overwhelm his foe with Angelic abilities.
Jiren ends up being much stronger in the Dragkn Ball Super manga’s version of the Tournament of Power, however. In the manga, Jiren actually adapts to Ultra Instinct Goku’s power up, and knocks Goku out of the form. Not just that, Jiren nearly eliminated Goku via ring out, but Vegeta caught him just in time. Goku has since grown strong enough where he can definitely defeat Jiren with Perfected Ultra Instinct, but back in the Universe Survival Saga, Jiren was the most powerful opponent Goku ever fought, save Beerus.
Moro is the Only Villain Who Can Use Ultra Instinct
Moro is going to be Dragon Ball's best villain in years when Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol finally starts airing. An ancient warlock who's been imprisoned for years, the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga begins when Moro successfully breaks out of jail and heads to New Namek. Moro is extremely dangerous, in large part thanks to his ability to consume Ki and energy, growing stronger the more he eats. After literally eating one of his minions, Seven-Three, Moro even gains the ability to absorb his opponent's powers.
During the arc's final battle, Moro absorbs the Angel Merus' abilities, gaining access to both God Ki and Ultra Instinct. Moro remains the only villain in Dragon Ball Super with access to Ultra Instinct, going from weaker than Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku to his rival in power. Angel Moro's mortal body cannot handle Merus' Angelic powers, however, and slowly starts to destroy himself inside out. To avoid destruction, Moro fuses with the Earth and siphons the energy of every living being on the planet, briefly surpassing Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku in the process.
Granolah Nearly Killed Goku
Granolah is the last living Cerealian in Dragon Ball, and harbors a deep grudge against the Saiyans for committing genocide against his people. When Granolah uses Cereal’s Dragon Balls to become the strongest warrior in the universe, he uses his newfound powers to get revenge against Goku and Vegeta for the sins of their fathers. Ultra Instinct Goku initially puts up a solid fight against Granolah, but he ends up being backed into a corner.
Granolah has access to virtually every technique known to man, and uses an afterimage of himself to wear Goku down. Even mixing True Ultra Instinct with Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue isn't enough to give Goku the edge to defeat Granolah. In the end, Granolah uses a killing blow that knocks Goku out of Perfected Ultra Instinct. It's only thanks to Ultra Instinct’s defense boost that Goku didn’t drop dead on the spot – and even then, he just barely survived.
Gas Survived All of Goku's Strongest Attacks & Techniques
Gas is the strongest Heeter and, for a brief period in the Dragon Ball Super manga, was the most powerful warrior in Universe 7. After Elec realizes that Granolah uses Cereal’s Dragon Balls to become the strongest man alive, he summons Toronbo and wishes for his brother Gas to be the most powerful fighter in the universe. Unlike Granolah’s wish, which traded his remaining life force in exchange for power, Elec words his wish in a way where Gas’ body will naturally adapt to anyone who grows stronger than him – pending they were in Universe 7 at the time of the wish.
Gas immediately begins adapting to Ultra Instinct Goku’s fighting style, countering him at every turn while keeping up in terms of raw power. Even when Goku briefly manages to out smart him, it doesn't take long for Gas to brute force his way back into the battle to make Goku’s life hell. Ultra Instinct Goku can put up a good fight, but alone, he just cannot compare to Gas’ non-stop evolution. Even with help from Granolah and Ultra Ego Vegeta, Gas survives everything Ultra Instinct Goku throws at him, only being thwarted once Black Frieza arrives on the scene.
Gohan Beast is Faster and Stronger Than Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku
At the end of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Piccolo changed the status quo forever when he faked his death, triggering Gohan's Beast transformation. Gohan Beast immediately became the strongest Z-Fighter in Dragon Ball Super, killing Cell Max when no one else could. In the Dragon Ball Super manga, the Super Hero Saga continues for three chapters, which serve as an epilogue to the movie. Gohan travels to Beerus' Planet, where he ends up sparring with Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku.
Despite Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku being at the top of his game, Gohan Beast quickly puts him in his place. Not only is Gohan Beast fast enough to overpower Perfected Ultra Instinct's reaction time, he's much stronger than Goku. With a single hit, Gohan Beast knocks Goku out of Perfected Ultra Instinct, effectively winning their fight.
Black Frieza Destroyed Ultra Instinct Goku With One Hit
Frieza is the single greatest threat to the multiverse right now. During the Moro Saga, Frieza decides to leave Universe 7 in order to explore the multiverse. On his travels, he finds a Hyperbolic Time Chamber that he trains inside for a full decade. Frieza grows more powerful than ever, while also unlocking a deadly new transformation: his Black Frieza form. At the end of the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Black Frieza makes his debut and wreaks havoc on Goku & Vegeta.
In a lightning-fast attack that neither Goku nor Vegeta can react to, Black Frieza knocks the Saiyans out of True Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego, respectively. Goku and Vegeta had been worn down by fighting Granolah and Gas at this point, but it's painfully clear they wouldn't stand a chance against Black Frieza, even at full power. Frieza could have killed Goku right then and there, but chose to spare him (and Vegeta), since he was only after Gas. He may not be so kind the next time the Saiyans face him, however.
Whis is Still Leagues Above Ultra Instinct Goku
Whis is the strongest being in Universe 7, and quite possibly the most powerful Angel in Dragon Ball, after the Grand Priest. Over the course of the Dragon Ball Super manga, Whis takes Goku on as his personal student, leaving Beerus to finish Vegeta’s training. During the Granolah the Survivor Saga, Whis has Goku train against him by using Perfected Ultra Instinct.
Unlike the start of the series where Goku couldn't so much as land a hit on Whis, several of Perfected Ultra Instinct Goku’s attacks connect. That said, Goku is nothing compared to Whis, even with the full power of PUI on his side. Whis sees right through Goku’s after image technique, effortlessly blocks all of his blows with no damage, and even manages to knock Goku out of Perfected Ultra Instinct with one strike. The chances of Goku ever beating Whis are slim to none – that's just how powerful Universe 7’s Angel is.
