Many people are saying that Kentucky has built an exceptional offensive line. Kenny Minchey is one of many newcomers who have received plenty of preseason hype, but who aren’t we talking enough about ahead of the 2026 season? I posed that question to Ty Bryant, Willie Rodriguez, andMinchey at SEC Media Days.
Grant Godfrey
Kentucky brought in a couple of former Blue Chippers to play inside linebacker, and it’s causing us to overlook another one of those who has been on Kentucky’s roster for the last three years.
“That’s a guy who came in with me in the ’23 class,” Ty Bryant said. “He has been buried in the depths a little bit in the depth chart (during) our few years here, but that’s a guy who’s taken a tremendous step. He’s always been smart, but he’s athletic too. He’s athletic, he gets guys lined up, he’s a communicator as well, and he’s a guy that’s gonna go all out for his team, man. That’s my dog.”
Mikkel Skinner
Kenny Minchey singled out a couple of players, including one of his pass-catchers, tight end Mikkel Skinner. Even though he may be behind Willie Rodriguez and Henry Boyer, Kentucky’s quarterback likes what he sees from the true sophomore.
“Everyone has their own unique attributes or abilities, but he’s very, very explosive,” said Minchey.
There is a new leaderboard feature in the Kentucky weight room. It tracks in real time how players are performing against their peers.
“Most of the time, he’s on top of the on top of that board, whether it be bench or squat. So he’s very, very strong, explosive athlete, and really fast.”
DeMarcus Gardner
This cornerback has impressed the Kentucky quarterback. “He’s instinctive. He plays really fast. He’s one of the fastest guys on the team,” said Minchey. “Everybody’s athletic, but he’s got a lot of twitch and athleticism that allows him to break on the ball really fast.”
An afterthought on the depth chart, Gardner received rave reviews throughout spring practice. Ty Bryant has seen tremendous growth from Gardner this offseason.
“It’s like he flipped a switch, and he has so much more motivation this year, and he’s ready to go, man. That’s a guy that I tip my cap off to because he really has just turned a new leaf, and you know he’s going all out, man. And I can tell each and every single day,” said Bryant.
“He’s a fast guy that can match people with his feet and make plays on the football. He had a lot of plays on football this spring, so I’m eager to see what he does this fall.”
Kenny Darby
The four-star wide receiver was a surprise flip from LSU, thanks in large part to Joe Sloan, during the early signing period. He caught a touchdown during the spring game, and Willie Rodriguez says he’s continuing to make strides.
“Kenny Darby is one of those guys I’ve been liking a lot this summer. He’s been doing really well, learning the playbook. You know, because as a young guy, fresh out of high school, it’s really hard sometimes to get that playbook down. He’s been doing great with it and really taking coaching, and he’s looked really good.”
