Jon Rothstein is one of the leading voices of College Basketball and routinley goes through almost every conference and team over the offseason. On Monday, July 20th, he realesed an episode of Inside College Basketball where he gives his power rankings of the Big 12, and talks abot every team individually.
Rothstein's comments on Cincinnati seemed to sound a little harsh according to users on social media, coming off as "I told you so" when the Bearcats and Mick Cronin parted ways after 9 straight tournament appearances from 2011-2019.
"Cincinnati is a program that is starting a new dawn, under Jerrod Calhoun. This is a program you have to remember has not been to the tournament since the 18-19 season. Which was Mick Cronin's final season at Cincinnati before he took the UCLA job," said Rothstein in his opening comments about Cincinnati.
Rothstein ranked the Bearcats as the No. 12 team in the Big 12 with a projected starting five of Tylen Riley, Myles Colvin, Adlan Elamin, Tyler Tejada, and Jayden Hastings. He noted the eligibility concern of MJ Collins and decided to leave him out of the starting lineup until his status is finalized.
"John Brannen and Wes Miller are the two coaches since that 18-19 season, and Cincinnati hasn't really been close to March Madness since Mick Cronin left for UCLA." Fans have pointed out on social media that the Bearcats finished better than No. 12 the last two seasons under Miller and are now projected to finish in a worse spot, with what seems to be a better roster.
Rothstein does point out that the Bearcats likely make the Tournament in 2019-20, Brannen's first year with Jarron Cumberland, Tre Scott and Keith Williams. He finishing his comments by saying, "let's face it, Cincinnati has been mostly irrelevant these last seven seasons."
