Donald Trump managed to gatecrash Spain's celebrations after winning the World Cup as he handed over the trophy and then failed to leave the podium

Spain ensured Donald Trump could not steal the limelight after the President gatecrashed their World Cup final celebrations.

Trump, who was humiliated by a key player in front of the cameras, ended his World Cup absence by attending the final as Spain deservedly overcame Argentina thanks to a goal in extra time from Ferran Torres. The match was overshadowed by some unsavory scenes at the final whistle, with Argentina players and staff committing shocking acts on the pitch that were missed by live TV cameras.

The victorious Spanish players eventually got their hands on the trophy after a presentation from Trump and FIFA boss Gianni Infantino, who took to the field to boos. It comes as a lip reader exposed FIFA boss Gianni Infantino's desperate plea to Trump that he ignored in a humiliating moment.

Never one to hide away from the limelight, Trump seemingly refused to leave the podium as Spain's players celebrated.

Infantino had to race across to encourage Trump to step away as he invaded the celebrations of the European and world champions, but unsurprisingly he failed to follow instruction.

Images from official photographers showed a shameless Trump clapping and waving to the crowd, as captain Rodri hoisted the trophy aloft just meters away.

But Spain ensured POTUS could not steal their thunder by cropping him out of their celebratory posts on social media.

Speaking after leaving the final in New Jersey, Trump paid tribute to Spain as they won a second World Cup. He said: "They both played well. I would say Spain played better.

"It was very exciting. It looked like Spain dominated but it was a very close match."

On the tournament, he added: "It is one of the greatest events of any kind. We are really happy it did so well.

"People have come from all over the world and loved our country. We have showed our country in a different light and it was a great thing."

Trump was quiet on Messi, who was savagely yanked back by the president in an excruciating moment.

The tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico has been met with mixed reviews over the past few weeks amid visa controversies, off-field incidents and most notably Trump's intervention in overturning a red card for USA striker Folarin Balogin.

FIFA broke its own rules with Sunday's half-time show too but Trump is hopeful the World Cup will return to America in the not-too-distant future.

He said: "Based on the numbers we will be requesting it immediately. We have to do this again, and we have to do this again while I am around, hear that Gianni?

"You should choose the United States of America again. This time, we will leave Canada and Mexico out. You choose us and pick somebody else for the next one, and that'll take some of the anger, hatred, and steam out of everyone."

It came as Argentina committed one final unsportsmanlike act during Spain's medal ceremony.
