A Pittsboro man has been charged with killing a dog, assaulting his 4-year-old son and trying to kill his wife Friday at their Chatham County home.
Chatham County sheriff’s deputies responded to the home in the 700 block of Cedar Grove Road in Pittsboro on Friday after getting a 911 call from a woman who said her husband had assaulted her and tried to kill her, according to a news release.
Deputies were able to help the woman escape the resident, leaving the husband inside the home with their 4-year-old son, the release stated. Multiple gunshots were fired inside the home while deputies attempted to get the man to surrender, it said.
Michael Levandoski Jr., 41, exited the home a short time later and was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for a mental health evaluation, deputies reported. His wife and son were also taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation, they said.
Deputies found the family’s black and brown dog, Nutter Butter, dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside the home, according to the release and arrest warrants. They also found multiple spent shell casings and a Smith & Wesson revolver, documents said.
An arrest warrant accuses Levandoski, who is trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (considered a deadly weapon), of pinning his wife to the floor and threatening to kill her. He also put his hands around her neck and throat and attempted to strangle her, the document states, noting deputies found red marks and bruising on the wife’s throat when they arrived.
Levandoski also attacked and tried to strangle his son, a second arrest warrant said. He does not have any other criminal history, the warrant states.
Levandoski was charged with two counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, felony second-degree kidnapping, felony cruelty to animals, felony discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, two counts of felony assault by strangulation, felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious physical injury, and three misdemeanors: communicating threats, domestic violence and assault on a female, it stated.
Levandoski is being held without bail in the Chatham County jail and could appear Aug. 3 in Chatham County District Court, officials said.
