A man has been convicted of charges stemming from a fatal shooting outside a Detroit apartment complex last year, officials said.
Damon Bentley, 28, was found guilty Tuesday of the charges by a Wayne County Circuit Court jury after a five-day trial, according to the Michigan Attorney General's Office and court records.
He was charged with second-degree murder, using a firearm during the commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed weapon.
The Detroit resident is scheduled to be sentenced next Tuesday, prosecutors said.
He faces up to life for second-degree murder, up to two years for using a firearm during a felony, and up to five years for carrying a concealed weapon.
"While there is no conviction that can alleviate the grief felt by his family and loved ones, I am grateful we were able to secure justice for those mourning this young man’s death," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a statement. "My office remains committed to prosecuting and holding accountable those who commit senseless violent crimes."
Bentley's attorney, Stephen Scharg, was not immediately available for comment on Wednesday.
Authorities alleged the defendant fatally shot a 28-year-old Westland man multiple times on May 4, 2025, outside the Grand Lofts apartment complex in southwest Detroit.
The attorney general's office charged Bentley days later.
In April, a judge ordered the defendant to stand trial on the charges.
Bentley is among Michigan residents who have recently been accused of second-degree murder.
Earlier this week, a Battle Creek man was arrested last Thursday near Kalamazoo in connection with a man's murder more than 30 years ago in Alaska. He was indicted on two counts of second-degree murder.
This month, a Warren man was convicted of second-degree murder for killing his 63-year-old live-in boyfriend in 2025.
Also in July, a fugitive from Guatemala linked to a Farmington Hills man's death 25 years ago was charged with multiple crimes, including first-degree and second-degree murder.
