Sen. Darline Graham Nordone (R-SC) signaled Monday that she intends to chart a different course on foreign policy from her late brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham, whose decades-long career was defined by his outspoken national security views.
While emphasizing that she respected her brother’s commitment to national security, Nordone said she plans to place greater focus on everyday policy issues affecting South Carolinians.
“I used to see him on the talk shows. I would watch him, and I’d be like, ‘Lindsey, you’re just talking about national security all the time.’ And I understand that’s important, protecting our wars, national security, absolutely,” she told Fox News's Sean Hannity. “But also talk about what matters to the average person, the price of groceries, the price of gas, healthcare, insurance. Those are the kinds of things that I’m worried about. So I think that’s important too.”
Nordone rejected the criticism that her brother was overly eager to use military force, saying his passion for national security was rooted in a desire to preserve peace.
“People thought it was about, ‘Oh, he just loves war.’ He didn’t love war. He wanted peace,” she said.
Nordone, who was appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster (R-SC) to temporarily fill the seat following her brother’s death, launched her campaign for a full term Monday. She joins Reps. Ralph Norman (R-SC), who entered the race Saturday, and Russell Fry (R-SC), who announced his candidacy Monday. The candidates will compete in a special election primary on Aug. 11.
She has also secured the backing of President Donald Trump.
“Darline, who comes from an absolutely incredible family, has been a WINNER all of her life and, should she accept, has my Complete and Total Endorsement in the Special Election for U.S. Senate in South Carolina,” Trump wrote.
Memorial services for Lindsey Graham will begin July 28 in Washington, D.C., according to his office, with additional services scheduled the following day in Columbia and Pickens County, South Carolina. Graham died suddenly at his Washington home at age 71, two days after his birthday and hours after returning from a trip to Kyiv, Ukraine.
The longtime senator represented South Carolina since 2003 and was one of the Republican Party’s most influential voices on foreign policy. He championed robust U.S. engagement overseas, advocating military aid for Ukraine, a hard-line approach toward Iran, strong support for Israel, and increased defense spending.
His advocacy earned praise from key world leaders following his death.
“America and the world have lost a resolute leader,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X, offering condolences to Graham’s family and colleagues.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Graham “a great friend of Israel” and “a great patriot,” writing that he “devoted his life to defending America, strengthening our alliance and standing up for the free world.”
Graham’s death comes as the Republican Party has embraced an "America First" foreign policy that is skeptical of military intervention and foreign aid, raising questions about whether another Republican will emerge with the political influence to carry forward his interventionist approach.
