Dark Souls Meets Assassin’s Creed Shadows In New Free PlayStation Plus RPG

This action-packed adventure blends the best of Assassin's Creed and Dark Souls, all available for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers.

If you're a PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium subscriber, then July is shaping up to be a rather tasty month for games. Not only can you play Ubisoft's overlooked gem Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and heat things up with some multiplayer madness in Firefighting Simulator: Ignite, but there's another masterpiece waiting for you to conquer or die trying. Set in war-torn 19th century Japan, with brutal combat, you'd be forgiven for thinking you're playing Assassin's Creed: Shadows mixed with Dark Souls.

As revealed by the official PlayStation Blog, this open-world action RPG from Team Ninja will challenge your reflexes and combat ability to the limit. Crank the difficulty setting up to Twilight and this game may just break your resolve. A challenge even for the souls-like purists among us. Learning enemy patterns and mastering your parrying technique is key to surviving this adventure as you journey across locations such as Yokohama, Edo, and Kyoto.

Rise of the Ronin is a welcome addition to the PlayStation Plus catalog and offers around 20 to 60 hours of gameplay depending on how much content you wish to complete. Team Ninja are no slouches when it comes to creating satisfying combat in games and Rise of the Ronin feels like it takes all the best gameplay systems from Nioh and Ninja Gaiden. Stealth and ranged combat are options to avoid an early death, but one-on-one boss encounters will seriously challenge your skills.

Rise of the Ronin has a MetaCritic score of 76 and a user score of 7.9, making it an easy game to recommend. Satisfying combat, challenging encounters and a strong narrative set in an interesting time in history filled with upheaval and political intrigue make for a game where the pros far outweigh the cons. Any Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice fans will feel right at home fighting through this adventure with gusto in Rise of the Ronin.

Being a PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium subscriber allows the perfect opportunity to try out Rise of the Ronin for free this month. While we're all waiting with bated breath for November 19 and Grand Theft Auto 6, it's great to have distractions like this to keep us busy. If the combat gets too challenging, you can always reduce the difficulty to Dawn and enjoy the story-rich setting and gorgeous scenery of 19th century Japan.

Whether you enjoy the samurai experience or just want to play Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora for free this month, July is pretty tasty for PlayStation Plus gamers. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go brush up on my counterspark skills and attempt to defeat Soji Okita for the billionth time.
