In May, when the calendar revealed that it was 100 days until South Carolina kicked off the season, I posted a story on GamecockCentral entitled “100 predictions for the 2026 Gamecocks.” Now, that countdown is down to just 47 days.
The prediction paired with day 47 read, “Three pass catchers will log at least 500 yards for the Carolina offense.”
Let’s break down that prognostication.

The leaders
During the 2025 season, only two Gamecocks had more than 350 receiving yards. One, Vandrevius Jacobs, is now at Miami. The other is Nyck Harbor, who enters the 2026 campaign as the favorite to lead the team in receiving.
Harbor, perhaps the most impressive combination of size and speed among all receivers in college football, was among the best big-play threats in the nation, with five touchdowns of at least 40 yards. If he takes another step forward for his senior season, Harbor could see his name featured on postseason award lists and then hear it called early in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Beyond Harbor, the leading returning receiver on the team is Jayden Sellers.
The younger brother of quarterback LaNorris Sellers, “Puppy” or “Pup” logged 337 yards on 22 catches in what amounted to about half a season of work. The math would indicate that a similar role over a full season would equal a big year for No. 17. As things stand, he is likely the favorite to start in the slot this fall.
Probably the top transfer portal addition at the receiver position was Nitro Tuggle. The former Georgia and Purdue wideout registered exactly 500 yards for the Boilermakers last season. He struggled with drops at times but still managed to have a very productive year. Tuggle is one of the favorites to start outside opposite Harbor.
If three players are to catch at least 500 yards’ worth of passes this season, Harbor, Sellers, and Tuggle should be considered the favorites to do it.
South Carolina’s darkhorse candidates
While Nyck Harbor, Jayden Sellers, and Nitro Tuggle represent the most likely names to post at least 500 yards, they are not the only players capable of accomplishing the feat.
Perhaps the most intriguing player to project at the receiver position for 2026 is DJ Black. A former walk-on Gamecock, Black transferred away and played at Limestone under Mike Furrey before joining the UCF Knights. He had nearly 1000 yards in just 11 games in 2024 for the Saints and then played rotationally for UCF in 2025. At 6-2 and 205 pounds, Black has solid size, and he is very fast in a straight line.
Competing with Sellers for the starting slot job, Mazeo Bennett has had a good offseason. The rising junior had a solid freshman campaign before logging just 10 catches in 2025. If he can manage to beat out Sellers (or if both players are too good to keep off the field), it would mean good things for the South Carolina offense.
The 2025 signing class included Sellers and five four-star receiver prospects. Brian Rowe transferred out, but Donovan Murph, Malik Clark, Jordon Gidron, and Lex Cyrus returned. Murph played the most in 2025 and was fourth on the team in receiving. Clark, Gidron, and Cyrus have high upsides, and it feels likely that at least one of the three non-Sellers second-year players will play significant snaps this fall.
Transfer portal additions Jayden Gibson and Charly Mullaly and freshmen Sequel Patterson and Stone Furrey are the other receivers competing to get on the field.
Seeing 500 yards from a single tight end feels unlikely. However, Brady Hunt has nearly done it in the past, posting 498 yards in 2022 at Ball State. His name has come up this offseason as a player who has improved. Mike Tyler, who hasn’t played much yet for the Gamecocks, has been one of the most talked-about young offensive players this offseason.
The running back position also feels like an unlikely source of a 500-yard performer in the receiving game. However, it is worth noting that Matt Fuller and Christian Clark appear to be the favorites for snaps.
