Cornyn vows to vote against Trump-nominated ambassador Kari Lake over withheld Africa AIDS funds

Cornyn vows to vote against Trump-nominated ambassador Kari Lake over withheld Africa AIDS funds

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said he'd oppose any committee action on Kari Lake's or Doug Mastriano's unless the administration disperses funds for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn says he'll vote against Trump's ambassador nominations unless the Trump administration releases money for anti-AIDS programs in Africa.

Cornyn told Semafor he would oppose any committee action on Kari Lake's nomination to be ambassador to Jamaica or Doug Mastriano's nomination to be ambassador to Slovakia unless the administration disperses funds for the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, commonly known as PEPFAR.

The Foreign Relations Committee is scheduled to consider Lake's nomination on Wednesday, and Mastriano is also likely to be added to the agenda.

Cornyn's vote against the nominations could stall both of them in committee, which has 12 Republicans and 10 Democratic members. The Democrats are all planning to vote no. With full attendance and Cornyn making good on his threat, the vote would be tied, which would fail.

Cornyn said he wouldn't be alone in his vote, and he would also oppose the nominations should they reach the Senate floor.
