Conan O’Brien is surely getting a lot of double takes these days.
The former late-night host debuted a new hairdo while interviewing Molly Shannon on his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast Monday, ditching his signature pompadour for a slicked-back look.
And fans were verklempt.
Team Coco followers flocked to the comments section on YouTube to commiserate over O’Brien’s, err, wet look. “Greaser Conan isn’t real. He can’t hurt you,” one wrote, with another adding, “If this is Conan’s new look he needs a gold chain.”

Some assumed he was “auditioning for the Irish spin off of The Sopranos,” while other fans contemplated whether he was a newly minted car salesman. “Why does he look like I’m about to be sold a used Kia Sorento,” a comment read.
One thing was for sure, most listeners couldn’t enjoy O’Brien’s chat with Shannon as they were waiting for literally anyone to address the elephant in the room.
“Sitting here watching thinking, are we just ignoring his hair?” a commenter said. Another added, “I’m expecting a dedicated segment about Conan’s hair at this point. Really, nobody says a word?”
“We ALL clicked for the hair and theres just NO explanation???” a fan protested. “TEAM COCO PLEASE.”
No, O’Brien did not disclose when, how, or why his hairstyle was different, but he did share a photo to his Instagram of himself smiling next to Shannon.
Followers began to assume O’Brien was maybe just fresh out of the shower and his hair “poofed” back up by the end of the day.
“Maybe we just got a window into his styling process,” a comment read. “I think we’ve all left the house with wet hair before.”
For most of his career, O’Brien has sported a signature coiffed ’do. It is always styled just right, and sits atop his head like a beacon of hope, so to see it combed back is surely a bit jarring for most.
Did he give up the look? Was he tired of styling his hair? Did the poof finally lose its poof?
“As [my pompadour] grows it’s crumbling under its own weight,” O’Brien joked while in quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. “I consulted a structural engineer, he said there’s too much on top and it’s starting to come over, and that’s what’s happening right now. The pompadour cannot sustain the gravitational pull.”
Gravity is surely gravitating.
