College basketball star Jhenéy Wallace, who had dreams of playing in the WNBA, died in a horrific rollover car crash on a California freeway. She was pronounced dead at the scene on July 15. She was one of three people inside a car when it left I-15 southbound and crashed down an 80-foot embankment at approximately 1:51 p.m., according to KTLA-TV.
Authorities with the San Bernardino County Fire Department said the driver and one passenger sustained critical injuries and were transported to a hospital. According to reports, the remaining two adults in the vehicle were a friend of Wallace’s and the friend’s mother.
Tamara Wallace, Jhenéy’s mother, told KTLA, “She was a great daughter. She was my best friend, my first-born. Always kept me smiling and encouraged me to do things. She was the best sister to her little sister and brother, very bubbly, always happy and loving.”
Wallace completed her freshman year at Victorville Community College with aspirations of reaching the WNBA. She saw limited playing time, appearing in just one game during the 2025-2026 season, but accumulated 24 total appearances and was expected to earn expanded minutes in the coming year.
Tamara added that Jheney “wanted so much out of life” and thanked everyone who reached out to her, as well as for all their prayers and support. She added that she just wants to keep her daughter’s name alive.
The Victorville Community College women’s basketball team paid tribute to Wallace on social media. The post read, “Our Victor Valley College Women’s Basketball family continues to mourn the loss of one of our own, Jhenéy Wallace. Jhenéy was more than a teammate. She was a friend, a daughter, a sister, cousin, granddaughter, and a cherished member of our Ram family whose impact will never be forgotten.”
Tamara Wallace Launches GoFundMe To Help With Funeral Expenses
Jhenéy’s mother, Tamara Wallace, launched a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses and other costs. It read, “Our family is heartbroken after the sudden loss of my beloved daughter, Jheney Wallace, in a tragic car accident. Jheney was so much more than a daughter; she was my firstborn, my best friend.”
“She was a loving big sister, cherished granddaughter, niece, cousin, teammate, and friend whose kindness, bright smile, and loving spirit touched so many lives. Her passing has left an unimaginable void not just in my heart but in everyone she was around,” the description added.
Tamar further mentioned, “We are asking for your support as we work to give Jheney the beautiful homegoing service she deserves—one that truly honors her life and the love she shared with everyone around her. Any donation, no matter the amount, will help ease the financial burden during this incredibly difficult time. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing this fundraiser and keeping our family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Concluding her statement, she wrote, “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love, support, and generosity as we celebrate Jheney’s life and keep her memory alive.”
So far, around $17,500 has been raised through GoFundMe for Wallace’s funeral and other expenses. The goal was set at $15,000.
