NEED TO KNOW

  • Chris Appleton transformed Chrishell Stause from rich brunette to a dimensional red shade that he’s dubbed “whiskey copper”
  • The celebrity hairstylist breaks down exactly how he achieved the hue
  • Appleton calls Stause’s look “a natural evolution rather than a dramatic departure”

Chrishell Stause has a bold new hair color, courtesy of Chris Appleton, just in time for her 45th birthday on July 21.

The reality star, 45, teamed up with the celebrity hairstylist and Schwarzkopf Professional Global Color Ambassador, 43, for the transformation, which Appleton has dubbed “whiskey copper.”

Stause came in with a rich brunette shade that Appleton says was “the perfect foundation” for her new red-tinted hue.

“Chrishell has such a naturally warm complexion, so I wanted to create a red that felt sophisticated and modern. Not costume-y or overly vibrant,” he tells PEOPLE. “She came in with a beautiful, rich chocolate brunette that had incredible shine and soft warmth running throughout, which made it the perfect foundation for this transformation.”

The goal, Appleton explains, was to craft a shade that “catches the light beautifully and feels rich, expensive and dimensional from every angle.”

“Whenever you’re making a dramatic shift like this, it’s less about chasing a trend and more about finding the version of that color that feels completely tailored to the person wearing it,” he adds.

Stause’s ideal color ended up being “a dimensional copper-red that sits somewhere between soft auburn and rich cinnamon,” per Appleton. AKA: whiskey copper.

“It has warmth, depth and shine without feeling too orange or too burgundy,” the stylist says. “It’s polished and incredibly flattering, which is exactly what I wanted for Chrishell.”

Stause’s chocolate brunette hair color was a great base to work from, but Appleton explains that creating a vibrant red is still a complex process.

He began by using Schwarzkopf Professional Color Remover to gently eliminate previous artificial pigment. This helped create the ideal clean canvas for the transformation.

Next, Appleton layered the color using Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA Vibrance, combining rich copper, cinnamon and warm auburn tones to create dimension rather than one flat red.

“IGORA Vibrance delivers long-lasting, vibrant color, which is especially important with a shade like red,” says the stylist. “I can layer multiple tones to create richness and movement while keeping the result incredibly natural. Made with Vitamins B3 and B5, the formula helps shield the hair’s surface during the coloring process, leaving the hair looking healthy and feeling smoother. That’s what gives the finished color that luminous, glossy quality.”

The last step was a hair gloss — Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA Vibrance — to refine the tone, amplify shine and seamlessly blend every shade together.

“The gloss enhances the richness and depth of the color while sealing the cuticle for a beautifully reflective finish, leaving the hair with a healthy-looking, multidimensional glow that feels as luxurious as it looks,” says Appleton.

If you’re looking to try out a shade of copper for yourself, Appleton says it’s important to stay on top of maintenance as red is one of the fastest-fading hair colors.

To keep the color looking fresh between appointments, he suggests booking a gloss. “Ask your colorist for a Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA Vibrance 0-00 Clear Gloss, which instantly refreshes shine and helps revive the richness and vibrancy of your color without changing your base shade,” the stylist says. “It’s one of the easiest ways to keep red looking fresh between salon visits.”

On the fence? There’s never been a better time to go red, according to Appleton. “We’re no longer seeing one version of red. There’s copper, cinnamon, strawberry, auburn, cherry and soft ginger. There really is a shade for everyone,” he says.

He adds, “It’s also one of those colors that can completely transform someone’s look while still feeling authentic to them. Chrishell is a great example… she went from a rich chocolate brunette to a warm, dimensional whiskey copper, and it feels like a natural evolution rather than a dramatic departure. Those are always my favorite transformations.”
