Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he spoke with President Donald Trump on Tuesday morning and both leaders “agreed to intensify negotiations in the coming weeks” after Trump announced new 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods.
“The American tariffs, the 338 tariffs, will come into effect in 29 days, and we will look at all options in terms of how we would respond if they do come into effect,” Carney told reporters.
Trump on Monday invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which permits 50% tariffs against trading partners deemed to have discriminated against the U.S.
“When I say we will do whatever it takes and keep all options, obviously, it’s a comprehensive point,” Carney said.
Carney earlier called the tariffs a “direct violation” of the free trade agreement between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
Trump, shortly after Carney’s remarks, defended the tariffs, telling reporters in the White House that Canada’s leadership has “been very tough” on the U.S. and “they need us to survive.”
