Caltrans has released a new Bay Area Transit Needs Assessment to help guide investments in transit-supportive infrastructure across the region's state highway network.

The assessment, released by Caltrans District 4, identifies locations where improvements such as bus-only lanes, safer crosswalks, and enhanced bicycle and pedestrian facilities could improve transit access and reliability.

According to transport officials, it accompanies the Caltrans Bay Area Transit Plan, completed in 2025, which outlines the agency's vision, goals, and strategies for supporting public transportation.

According to Caltrans, the plan is the state's first district-level transit plan and is intended to serve as a model for regional transit planning in California. Together, the plan and assessment are designed to help expand transit access, increase ridership, and improve safety and mobility across the nine-county Bay Area.

The assessment comes with an interactive online map that highlights locations where improvements could make transit easier and more accessible.

The proposed $71.5 billion merger of Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern to create the nation’s first coast-to-coast single-line railroad represents the logical culmination of that progress. Predictably, some […]
