But there’s a catch.

But there’s a catch.

In the fast food world, chains need something that helps them stand out from all the other burger and fry joints out there. At McDonald’s, it’s the signature double-bunned Big Mac; at Wendy’s, it’s the fresh, never-frozen square beef patties; and at Burger King, it’s the proprietary flame-grilled Whopper

Burger King has been flame-grilling all its burgers for years, which gives them the distinct broiled, charred flavor of an at-home burger you’d make on your own barbecue. While the method is the standard for its burgers, BK doesn’t broil all its sandwiches—at least not anymore.

In the ‘90s, Burger King offered the BK Broiler chicken sandwich, which ran a grilled chicken patty through the broiler. Aside from Chick-fil-A, it was one of the only grilled chicken sandwiches on the market.

Burger King’s BK Broiler was eventually discontinued, and even though fans love its crispy Original Chicken Sandwich, it didn’t stop customers from asking for a grilled option back. Now, Burger King is one step closer to flame-grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps as it’s currently testing six options.

Burger King Begins Testing Flame-Grilled Chicken Sandwiches and Wraps

Burger King is currently testing three Flame-Grilled Chicken Sandwiches and three Flame-Grilled Chicken Wraps at select restaurants in California. The sandwiches include Classic, Spicy, and Bacon & Swiss varieties, while the wraps are being tested in Classic, Spicy, and Honey Mustard options.

BK’s new Flame-Grilled Chicken Sandwiches are all topped with a flame-grilled chicken patty, lettuce, tomato, and Royal Sauce—with the Spicy version adding Fiery Glaze Sauce and the Bacon & Swiss featuring crispy bacon and melted Swiss cheese.

The Flame-Grilled Chicken Wraps feature a strip of flame-grilled chicken, tomato, lettuce, and sauce—Royal Sauce for the Classic, Royal Sauce and Spicy Glaze Sauce for the Spicy, and Honey Mustard for the Honey Mustard—in a tortilla.

This isn’t the first time Burger King has tried to bring Flame-Grilled Chicken to menus. In 2024, it tested the Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich and Royal Crispy Chicken Wraps at select restaurants. The sandwiches had the same flavor lineup, while BK went all-in on wraps, offering six flavors: Classic, Fiery, Honey Mustard, Philly, Fiery Bacon, and Bacon and Cheddar.

During the test, customers described the flame-grilled chicken as “tough” and “inedible,” so BK didn’t bring that version to menus. From the menu imagery alone, it looks like the new flame-grilled chicken is thicker, which should help deliver a tender, juicier flavor and texture.

Burger King is currently testing these sandwiches at restaurants in Temecula, California, according to food blogger @chrisfrez. However, some Instagram users in the comment section say they’ve spotted the flame-grilled chicken in Nassau County, New York, and Los Angeles County, California.

As with all menu tests, BK will offer the new Flame-Grilled Chicken Sandwiches and Flame-Grilled Chicken Wraps for a limited time before deciding whether to add them to the full nationwide menu. Until then, the rest of us Burger King customers can enjoy the latest chicken sandwich drop: the new Loaded Jalapeño Original Chicken Sandwich and a Club Chicken Original Chicken Sandwich.
