Bugatti has built the last road-going W16, and the numbers on the spec sheet tell a better story than the press release does.
The final W16 Mistral rolled out of the Atelier at Molsheim in July, finished in a two-tone combination Bugatti calls Pearl and Sparkle, with a Magnolia and Grey Carbon Matt cabin. It's the 99th and final example, and with it the 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 exits road-car production after two decades of service in the Veyron, the Chiron and this roadster.
What the W16 actually was
Worth being precise about, because "W16" gets thrown around as if it means sixteen cylinders in a W. It doesn't quite.
The architecture is two narrow-angle VR8 banks — cylinders staggered within a single head at roughly 15 degrees — mounted at 90 degrees to each other on a common crankshaft. That packaging is why an eight-liter sixteen-cylinder fits in a car with a 2,711 mm wheelbase at all. A conventional V16 with that displacement would be long enough to require a different car around it.
Feeding it are four turbochargers running Bugatti's two-stage sequential arrangement with water-to-air intercooling, which is the trick that lets the final specification produce 1,600 Nm from 2,250 rpm all the way to 7,000 rpm while peak power of 1,177 kW arrives at 7,050. A flat torque plateau spanning nearly 5,000 rpm is not something you get from a single-stage setup at this output. Two smaller turbos spool early, the second pair joins above a threshold, and the engine behaves like something naturally aspirated and enormous rather than something boosted.

The thermal load that creates is the reason a Chiron carries ten radiators. It's also why the W16 was never going to be hybridized: there is no room in the engine bay for an electric motor, a battery and the cooling both would demand, on top of the cooling the engine already needs.
The regulation story is lazier than the truth
The reflex explanation for the W16's death is emissions law. It's mostly wrong.
The Mistral's homologated figures are 21.8 l/100 km combined and 495 g/km of CO2, efficiency class G — as bad as anything currently type-approved in Europe. But EU fleet CO2 regulation exempts manufacturers registering fewer than 1,000 new cars a year, and Bugatti builds in the dozens. Fleet averages were never the constraint.
What did constrain it was individual-vehicle type approval: each successive Euro standard tightens particulate and NOx limits and, critically, real-world driving emissions testing, which a 1,600 PS quad-turbo engine has a much harder time satisfying than a bench cycle. Add the cost of recertifying an engine designed in the early 2000s for each new standard, spread across 99 cars, and the math stops working long before any regulator bans anything.
The engine died of engineering obsolescence and accounting, not prohibition. That's a less dramatic story and a more useful one.
Where the record actually sits
The Mistral's published top speed is 420 km/h in Top Speed mode, and 380 in the other four driving programs. The 453.91 km/h figure that made headlines belongs to the one-off World Record Car driven by Andy Wallace at Papenburg in November 2024 — a single vehicle built before series production started in early 2025, not a customer specification.
Bugatti was clear about that distinction from the start, and it matters if you're valuing one of these. The 99 customer cars are 420 km/h cars. Anyone selling a standard Mistral on the strength of 282 mph is selling you a number the car in front of you cannot reach.
That record car, incidentally, was handed to its owner at Silverstone this year, which quietly answers a question people had been asking for eighteen months.
The weight comparison nobody makes
Here's the detail that reframes the whole transition. The Mistral weighs 2,040 kg dry. The Tourbillon's specification lists DIN mass under 1,995 kg — with a 24.8 kWh battery, three electric motors and an 800-volt architecture on board.
A plug-in hybrid V16 hypercar is lighter than the roadster it replaces. That's a remarkable engineering achievement and it says a lot about how much mass four turbochargers, their plumbing, their intercoolers and their cooling circuits actually represent.

The character change is stark, though. The naturally aspirated 8.3-liter V16 makes 1,000 hp and 900 Nm and revs to 9,000. The W16 made 1,600 Nm at 2,250 rpm. Those are opposite engines. The Tourbillon covers the torque gap electrically — two 250 kW motors on the front axle, one at the rear — which means the low-speed shove that defined the W16 experience now comes from a battery rather than from combustion.
What it means if you own one
Long-term parts availability is the question. A quad-turbo engine with bespoke two-stage plumbing, built in roughly 1,100 total road cars across two decades, has an extremely narrow supplier base, and Bugatti's dealer network is measured in dozens of sites worldwide. Owners of last-of-line cars historically fare well on factory support — heritage departments exist precisely because these cars are marketing assets — but the operating assumption should be that this is a factory-serviced car forever, not one an independent specialist can pick up in fifteen years.
For insurance, the relevant issue is agreed-value coverage with a specified repairer clause. A Sur Mesure car with hand-finished detailing, a Lalique crystal armrest plate and one-off embroidery has no book value and no comparable, and a policy that pays market value on a total loss is worthless here.
As for the market, "final example" cars have a reliable pattern: they outperform the run, but the premium concentrates in cars with documented factory significance rather than just a late chassis number. This one has a dedication plate, the Ettore Bugatti signature stitched into the headrests and rendered in aluminum on the sills, and a falcon replacing the elephant on the shift lever at the customer's request. It will be the one people remember.
Bugatti opened La Manufacture in Molsheim on 3 July, days before this car left. The timing was not an accident.
