Minnesota Vikings fans won’t need much help finding the biggest story at training camp. Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy are the stars of the quarterback competition, and every rep will be graded by which quarterback gives Kevin O’Connell the best chance to avoid another uneven start.

Murray brings the longest résumé after seven seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, but his career hasn’t matched the expectations attached to being the No. 1 overall pick. He has completed 1,974 of 2,941 passes for 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns, and 60 interceptions, posting a 92.2 passer rating. His 2025 season ended after five games because of a mid-foot sprain.

McCarthy offers youth and familiarity with O’Connell’s system, though his first season leading Minnesota’s offense showed how much development remains. The 2024 No. 10 overall pick played 10 games in 2025, throwing for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while losing time to ankle and concussion issues. He sat out his rookie season with a knee injury.

Former Vikings guard Jeremiah Sirles believes Flores should be central to the evaluation. On the “Purple Daily” podcast, Sirles said the early winner should be the quarterback who can “weather the Brian Flores poop storm” and show enough poise, maturity and command to outperform the other option.

That test reaches beyond sack totals or highlight throws. Flores changes the picture before the snap, crowds the line of scrimmage, and forces quarterbacks to identify where pressure is coming from. Murray’s experience and mobility should help him survive those looks, while McCarthy’s response would show whether his processing has caught up with his physical tools.

Sirles’ strongest point came when he described how Flores should approach the competition: “If I’m Brian Flores, I’m going to try and sink both these guys because we’re going to need one of them to be able to figure it out. So, send the torpedoes, boys, and let’s see which ones can figure it out and which one can’t.”

Protecting either quarterback with vanilla camp periods would only delay the answer. Minnesota opens its public training camp schedule on Aug. 1, and O’Connell needs enough time to build the offense around one starter rather than splitting meaningful work deep into August.

Sirles warned that waiting until after the first preseason game could leave the Vikings “behind the eight-ball” entering September. Flores can help prevent that by creating the chaos Minnesota’s starter will face in live games, then letting the better decision-maker separate himself before camp winds down.
