Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Vivienne files to legally drop ‘Pitt’ surname

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's daughter, Vivienne, is seeking to legally remove "Pitt" from her last name after filing a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court to change her legal name.

According to court documents, the reason for the name change is listed as “personal.” The move comes amid similar surname changes by several of the former couple's other children.

A hearing on Vivienne's petition has been scheduled for November 2, according to the court documents. In May 2024, she was credited as "Vivienne Jolie" in the Playbill for Broadway’s 'The Outsiders,' which she helped produce alongside her mother.

Vivienne also is not the first of the former couple's six children to take steps toward dropping the "Pitt" surname. Zahara is seeking to legally change her name to Zahara Marley Jolie, while Maddox is requesting to become Maddox Chivan Jolie.

In 2024, Shiloh filed to drop Pitt from her name and change it to Shiloh Jolie. “It’s sad to see someone repeatedly publicize their successful alienation of their children from the other parent,” a source close to Pitt previously told PEOPLE.

Shiloh’s petition was granted in August 2024. Meanwhile, the other petitions remain pending, with Zahara's hearing scheduled for September 28 and Maddox's set for September 14, according to previous court documents obtained.

Vivienne, who was born alongside her twin brother, Knox, in July 2008, is the youngest of the six children. Reflecting on raising her children, Jolie told PEOPLE in October 2021, “I have six very individual human beings in my home. I am so excited about all the different stages and feelings and curiosities that they go through."

She further said, "Why wouldn’t you be? We’re supposed to help them figure out who they are. And you can’t figure out who they are if you don’t enthusiastically develop with them.”

The surname changes come after years of reports of strain between the children and Pitt following his acrimonious split from Jolie in 2016 after two years of marriage and more than a decade as a couple. Their divorce was finalized in late 2024 after a protracted legal battle.

However, the exes remain locked in an ongoing dispute over Chateau Miraval, the French winery they once owned together. Earlier this month, Jolie argued in court papers obtained by TMZ, that he had mischaracterized her claims in an effort to obtain years of her financial records. 

In the filing submitted on June 26 in Los Angeles Superior Court, Jolie asked the court not to require her to turn over tax returns and other financial records dating back to 2017 after Pitt’s June 18 filing sought documents showing her income and profit participation payments from 2017 through 2019.

“Jolie has made her alleged financial vulnerability central to her case,” Pitt’s filing stated. Her attorneys argued Pitt was incorrectly portraying her as having claimed she was in financial distress. “The issue is not whether Jolie needed the money — the issue is that she was trying to untangle her life and her finances from her controlling and abusive ex-husband,” the filing stated.

Pitt also argued Jolie had alleged she wanted “financial independence” and had “concluded that she needed to sell her interest in Chateau Miraval” to achieve it. However, her attorneys contended she “has never alleged that she was in financial distress.”
