Most of us understand that when you’re a guest at someone’s home or being treated to a meal, the courteous response is to be thankful and gracious. It’s a fundamental principle of etiquette that has been handed down through countless generations.

Yet, a young woman recently went online to recount an experience demonstrating that sometimes it’s the host who displays a startling absence of manners, transforming what should have been an enjoyable evening into a profoundly awkward situation.

The Incident

A 23-year-old woman had been staying with her boyfriend and his family, and on her final day, he decided to treat everyone to a goodbye dinner. He picked one of his go-to restaurants-an all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue place-and brought along five relatives.

The woman noted that she’s not particularly fond of red meat and avoids pork entirely, with a strong preference for chicken and seafood. Nevertheless, her boyfriend went ahead and ordered heaps of beef and pork for the group.

She placed her own order-chicken, shrimp, rice, and vegetables-and was careful to finish everything she took, knowing the restaurant imposes fees for uneaten food. The problem started when her boyfriend began pushing her to eat what he had ordered.

After she agreed to try a piece of beef, he offered her pork. When she showed reluctance, he shot her a “stern look,” and she “felt forced to eat a small slice” simply to avoid conflict. But it didn’t end there. He then resorted to outright deception, trying to pass off additional pork as chicken.

His demeanor turned sour for the remainder of the meal. Afterward, in the car, he unleashed his frustration. He told her he was angry that he had spent $200 on dinner and she had only eaten “3 pieces of chicken.” He called her ungrateful. But as she rightly observed, he was the one who selected the restaurant, invited six other people, and ordered food he already knew she wouldn’t eat.

The Internet Reacts

The online response was overwhelmingly supportive of the young woman, with many people voicing alarm and outrage over her boyfriend’s conduct. The reactions generally sorted themselves into a few clear categories.

First were the “Absolutely Not” commenters, who were livid on her behalf. They interpreted his actions not merely as a trivial squabble about a restaurant tab, but as a troubling exhibition of controlling tendencies. The mention of the “stern look” resonated deeply with thousands of readers. One of the highest-rated comments stated, “‘He gave me a stern look’ girl… what? This cannot be the first time he has tried to force you to do things you don’t want to do.”

Another commenter was horrified by the trickery, writing, “He was trying to trick you? And you put up with that?” The consensus was unmistakable: this kind of behavior is neither normal nor acceptable.

Next came those who systematically tore apart the boyfriend’s reasoning. Rather than trying to see his side, they simply highlighted how illogical his argument was. Multiple users crunched the numbers, observing that a $200 tab split among seven people works out to under $30 each-hardly an outrageous sum for a dinner outing.

One commenter offered insight into his possible thinking, explaining that some people treat buffets like a competition to “eat as cost effective as possible,” where you “win” by consuming more than your share’s worth. Even so, nobody believed this justified his behavior in the slightest.

Lastly, there was the “What I Would Have Done” contingent, populated by women who would not have remained so composed when confronted with such disrespect. They described exactly how they would have responded to his intimidating glare.

“A Stern Look would get The Eyebrow in return and he better get back in his own lane,” one user proclaimed. The most frequently offered counsel, though, was straightforward: leave the relationship. As it happened, she followed that advice, later providing an update confirming that she had, indeed, left him.

The Etiquette Verdict

Let’s make one thing absolutely clear: the boyfriend’s conduct was entirely unacceptable. The cardinal rule of hosting is making sure your guests feel welcomed and at ease, and that unquestionably extends to respecting their known food preferences.

Selecting a restaurant that doesn’t suit your partner’s dietary needs is careless enough; but then pressuring, belittling, and even attempting to deceive them into consuming something they’ve already refused is an astonishing breach of trust and basic respect. His gripe about the expense was nothing more than a flimsy cover for his controlling and manipulative tendencies. Genuine generosity never arrives with conditions or a running tally.

Your Thoughts

This scenario transcends a mere disagreement over dinner. It reveals a deep-seated lack of respect within the relationship. But what’s your take? Was the boyfriend’s behavior simply a misunderstanding about expenses, or was it an unmistakable red flag pointing to a controlling personality?
