Boston College is following the Trinidad Chambliss playbook.
The former D-II QB Chambliss went to Ole Miss, was a superstar, and is now ranked the No. 1 quarterback in college football by The Athletic.
For the season ahead, BC will be relying on a Division II transfer of its own, Mason McKenzie.
From Saginaw Valley State in Michigan, McKenzie has a lot of physical tools.
Despite that, he's been ranked No. 103 among QBs across the country in The Athletic's college football quarterback rankings. That 103 comes out of 138 teams at the FBS level, so it's not ideal for the Eagles' hopes in the ACC.
"The Eagles hope McKenzie, who played at Saginaw Valley State in Michigan, is the latest Division II transfer quarterback success story," The Athletic wrote in its assessment of McKenzie. "He is a tough player who runs a lot (942 rushing yards) but will also wait in the pocket until the last possible moment and will take whatever hit may follow. But there are questions about his size and passing ability, and he has been turnover-prone (11 interceptions and four lost fumbles last year)."
So much of college football comes down to having the right quarterback.
Chambliss wasn't even going to start at Ole Miss until an injury, and that worked out just fine.
Cam Newton was doubted at Auburn until he wasn't.
That's not to say McKenzie will be a superstar. But it's to point out that there's unknown in these situations even when everyone assumes they know the scoop.
McKenzie is a player who didn't get the recruitment he would've wanted before. Now, he's got a chance at an ACC program to prove himself. He's certainly going to put in the work to try and shine despite the doubts.
