Black women are the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in the nation

More and more Black women are choosing to pursue entrepreneurship.

As AFROTECH previously reported, at least 300,000 Black women lost their jobs by February 2025 in the midst of a highly polarizing political climate, with conservatives in favor of dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, initiatives, and roles. At the federal level, the loss of DEI positions and programs has resulted in more than 30 members of Congress — led by Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rep. Jonathan Jackson (D-IL) with the support of 24 civil rights organizations and nonprofits  — signing a letter demanding accountability from the Trump administration, per AFROTECH.

Forbes reports that the unemployment rate among Black women dropped from 7.07% to 5.73% between March and July, with 454,000 Black women currently out of the workforce. College-educated Black women were the most impacted by layoffs. As a result, the employment-to-population ratio among Black women dropped 3.5 percentage points, notes the outlet.

“When given the opportunity, we overindexed, got the education, built the experience, checked every box, only to watch the rules change, and the entire game get redesigned, right from under us,” Spann explained, per Forbes.

Backed by tools, education, and the “know-how,” Spann believes Black women have the power to dictate their own outcomes. Now, more and more Black women are saying goodbye to the idea of returning to a 9-to-5 role altogether and becoming entrepreneurs, according to Forbes. By the numbers, there was a 13% increase in Black women-owned employer businesses between 2024 and 2025, compared with a 4.4% increase in women-owned businesses overall.

Black women are now the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs, notes Forbes.

“The job market created the rupture. AI removed the barriers to build. In that gap, women decided they deserved better than what they were being handed and started reallocating their capital, time, and trust away from one system and into themselves,” Spann told the outlet.
