It's been a long time coming, but Bethesda Game Studios has officially confirmed that Fallout 5 is in development. The announcement came today as part of a broader studio update that also touched on the future of Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, The Elder Scrolls 6, and Starfield.
While you shouldn't get too excited about the prospect of exploring the wastelands any time soon, this confirmation is at least enough to put years of uncertainty to rest. Many Xbox studios have been shaken up recently due to layoffs and restructuring, leading to widespread speculation about the future of many titles and franchises, Bethesda's included. It's nice to hear they are still on track and there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
Fallout 5 Is Currently in Pre-Production
According to Bethesda's July 17th statement, Fallout 5 is currently in the pre-production phase, and it is the studio's "long-range destination."
The company reiterated that its primary focus is firmly on The Elder Scrolls 6, which is a lot further along in the development process and has a majority of Bethesda Game Studios' development team working on it. Once The Elder Scrolls 6 hits gamers' screens, Fallout 5 will be the next focus.
While we weren't quite lucky enough to get any solid release dates, footage, or screenshots of these new projects, the confirmation itself is one of the biggest Fallout announcements we've gotten since Fallout 76 released in 2018.
The Future of Fallout
As we mentioned before, the spotlight was not only on Fallout 5 in today's announcement. We got updates on multiple new Fallout projects, including:
- Fallout 3 Remastered
- Fallout: New Vegas Remastered
- A brand-new Fallout project in collaboration with Obsidian Entertainment
- A Fallout 76 expansion (Raven Rock)
- Ongoing Fallout Shelter updates
The Fallout 3 and New Vegas remasters had been rumored for years since some Microsoft court documents were leaked, but today's announcement makes them official. Like Fallout 5, there were no release date windows or announcements, but those will come with time.
While today's announcement didn't answer some of our bigger questions, like what Fallout 5's setting, story, or protagonist will be, it did provide something fans have wanted for years: official confirmation that the next mainline Fallout game is definitively on its way. It's still just in pre-production, so we can't say that it's full steam ahead, but the train has officially left the station.
