Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and House Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) slammed President Donald Trump amid escalating tensions with Iran.
‘Unconstitutional’ War in Iran
In a post on X, Sanders criticized the ongoing war with Iran, calling it “unconstitutional” on Tuesday, which has left “more American soldiers dead and wounded,” as well as causing the deaths of “innocent men, women and children in Iran.”
He said that the war has also caused “rising prices in the U.S.” as well as globally. “CONGRESS MUST STOP FUNDING THIS ILLEGAL WAR NOW,” the Vermont Independent said in the post.
Hakeem Jeffries Decries ‘Stronger Iran’
Jeffries also took to X on Tuesday, saying that the Iran war had resulted in gas prices in the U.S. spiking. He also lamented the deaths of U.S. service members and decried Iran being “stronger” than it was before the war began. “It’s time to bring Donald Trump’s war in the Middle East to an end. Enough,” he said in the post.
Gas prices broke the $4 threshold in the U.S., with data from the American Automobile Association (AAA) showing that the national average price of gas on Tuesday was at $4.0190/gallon. Oil prices rose too, with Brent crude at $92.06/bbl at the time of writing this article, while the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) Crude rose 1.02% to $85.20/bbl at press time.
Notably, gas prices hit the $4/gallon national average twice this year, something that GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said was not recorded even during the 2008 financial crisis.
Iran War Updates
The news comes as Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said that the Iran war has cost the U.S. $37.5 billion amid his defense of a request for additional funds of approximately $70 billion to continue efforts.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf slammed the Trump administration for its contradictory move of bringing more military equipment into the region while claiming to stop the war, he said.
