On Tuesday, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt) argued that his earlier push for U.S.-China cooperation on artificial intelligence has been validated after reports emerged that Washington and Beijing are preparing for formal AI talks.

Sanders Says US-China AI Dialogue Vindicates Earlier Position

Sanders took to X and highlighted a reversal by critics who opposed his call for international AI cooperation.

“3 months ago, I was told how wrong I was for talking to leading U.S. and Chinese scientists about the need for international cooperation on AI,” he wrote.

Adding, “Now, the United States and China are doing exactly what should have happened all along: sitting down to talk. Better late than never.”

His remarks followed a Reuters report that the U.S. and China are expected to hold talks on artificial intelligence in September as both countries seek to address the risks posed by increasingly powerful frontier AI models.

According to the report, the discussions stem from agreements reached during President Donald Trump’s summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in May.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to lead the U.S. delegation, although the participants, agenda and location have yet to be finalized.

AI Safety, National Security At Center Of Discussions

Reuters reported that Washington and Beijing are weighing how to manage AI-related risks ranging from military applications and cyberattacks on critical infrastructure to the broader economic impact of advanced AI systems.

Speaking to Fox Business on Tuesday, Bessent pointed to concerns over intellectual property, saying U.S. large language model “watermarks” had been found on several Chinese models.

Jim Cramer Warns Against Chinese AI Models

Cramer also weighed in on X, arguing that U.S. companies should avoid Chinese AI models despite potential cost savings.

“We must NOT let our companies use these Chinese models to save a few bucks. OpenAI and Anthropic are correct. This is vital national security… I respect the Chinese people greatly but these companies are run by the PLA for heaven’s sakes.”

Data shared by The Kobeissi Letter on X on Sunday showed that Chinese AI models processed a record 58% of tokens used by U.S. companies on the platform, nearly tripling their share since mid-January and briefly peaking at 63% during the first week of July.
