Ben Affleck makes confession about his McDonald’s eating habits on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"

The Oscar winner teamed up with ‘Jeopardy!’ champ Jamie Ding on the July 22 episode of the game show

Ben Affleck put his trivia skills to the test on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and his fast-food knowledge came into play.

Season 5 of the game show premiered Wednesday, July 22, on ABC. To kick-start the new season, Larry David appeared with his daughter Cazzie David, and Affleck, 57, teamed up with Jeopardy! champion Jamie Ding.

The pair competed for a chance to win $1 million for Affleck’s charity, the Eastern Congo Initiative. 

Once host Jimmy Kimmel welcomed Ding, 35, to the stage, he recalled the last Jeopardy! super champion to appear on the show was Ken Jennings, who won big with partner Matt Damon. Poking fun at the pair, Kimmel, 58, told Ding he had a “better partner who also happens to be Matt’s partner, correct?” 

As Kimmel introduced Affleck, he joked, “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome that demon Matt Damon’s much-better half,” referring to the actors’ lifelong friendship. 

Kimmel and Damon’s playful “feud” started in 2005 when Kimmel made a dig at Damon on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and has been going strong ever since.

Affleck joked he would be “riding” Ding’s “coattails,” following his partner’s lead throughout the night. The pair showed their team spirit by wearing matching bracelets in Ding’s lucky color, orange.

“I’m in the club. I’m on the team. We’re the Wonder Twins,” Affleck said. 

Before their first question, Kimmel joked, “I have to say this is a different situation because … when Ken was here, we were like, ‘Okay, Ken is super smart,’ and then we got, you know, this anvil tied to his neck,” referring Damon. “Whereas Ben happens to be super smart. So this is quite a duo here.”

At one point, Kimmel asked Ding what his favorite Affleck movie was, and Ding revealed he watched Good Will Hunting the night before.

“Last night? Was that your first time seeing it,” Kimmel asked. To which Ding confessed he had seen clips of it on YouTube but hadn’t seen it in full until then. “That’s actually how I watch some of your TV shows,” Affleck told Ding.

The 10th question read: “Unless you specifically ask for more, which McDonald’s sandwich is served with half a slice of cheese?” 

Possible answers for this question included McRib, McCrispy, Filet-O-Fish and Big Mac. 

Despite Affleck confessing, “I eat a lot of McDonald’s — like a lot. All the time,” the pair were stumped and turned to the audience for help. After the crowd submitted their answers, “Filet-O-Fish” came out on top. 

“I feel like that was sort of what I was going toward,” Affleck said. “What about you?” To which Ding replied, “Same. That was where I was going.” 

Filet-O-Fish was correct, earning them $32,000. 

The $250,000 question read: “During the annual Spanish festival El Colacho, men dressed in devil costumes run and jump over what?”

Possible answers for this question included hot coals, stacks of money, babies and hats. 

“So when Matt was on this show, I was sitting there like, ‘I could answer that question. I could answer that,’ you know, like trying to just reassure my insecurity,” Affleck said. “And he got this question about this New Year’s Eve thing in Spain, and, like, what do you eat with grapes was the answer. And I didn’t know that.”

“I googled Spain and festival customs because, you know, ‘cause I said in the beginning, well, I speak Spanish, and I know a little bit about the Spanish-speaking world and I thought, ‘Oh God, that would’ve been embarrassing.’ And I googled these customs and stuff that happened. And this was one of them.”

“This is a tip to Matt Damon. Thank you, Matt,” he added, looking into the camera.

“We will be editing that out of the program,” Kimmel joked. “You’re not trying to say Matt helped you with this, are you? Because I’ve had enough.”

“Indirectly, yes,” Affleck said. “I have to say, well, actually, I don’t know if he— Oh, no, he got the answer right on that too.”

“He did get the answer right. The one answer he got right the whole night was that one,” Kimmel replied. 

“[It] was kind of like a handoff to me,” Affleck said. 

After Ding said his guess would be “hot coals,” Affleck revealed, “It’s actually the one you were shocked by. That’s how I remembered it. It’s babies.”

“I trust you, Ben,” Ding said, turning to his partner. To which Kimmel asked, “Jamie, how does it feel to be riding Ben’s coattails now?”

“It feels good. It’s a team effort,” Ding replied. 

“Unless I honestly dreamed this, which would be embarrassing, it’s babies,” Affleck reassured his partner, though he wore a worried expression. 

Babies was the correct answer, and the pair celebrated with a hug and a fist bump. 

As the alarm went off, warning the players the show had ended and would be continued, Affleck turned to his partner and joked, “Did you bring a weapon, Jamie?” 

Kimmel explained that the final two questions of Affleck and Ding’s turn would be shown on the next episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which will air Wednesday, July 29, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. 

Other celebrity contestants featured on this season of the game show include Brad Paisley, Brooks Nader, Jesse Eisenberg, Clayton Kershaw, Michael Keaton, Awkwafina, Leslie Odom Jr., Jackie Tohn, Michael Che and Colin Jost, among others.
