Beauty pros say this is the secret to a smooth, silky shave

Want a Smoother Shave? Experts Say Start Here
Shaving doesn't have to be a hassle. Use these tips and tweaks to get it right every time.

These tips and tweaks can make all the difference.

Getting the smoothest, cleanest shave possible has more than just aesthetic benefits. While it’s always nice to achieve silky, supple skin after removing hair, it’s also important to prevent skin irritation and possible damage in the process.

“A smooth shave will prevent irritation like razor burn and allow you to remove hair as close to the skin as possible,” says Good Housekeeping Beauty & Personal Care Lab Reviews Analyst Chiara Butler. It’ll also reduce painful ingrown hairs and unsightly cuts from accidentally nicking yourself with a razor. Here, Butler shares some of the best tips for getting the smoothest shave every single time. Take a look and prepare to say goodbye to ingrown hairs and razor burn.

Properly prep your skin

While you may not always think about it, the way you prep your skin before shaving matters just as much as what you actually use to shave. Butler says to get the best results, you should always begin by including a moisturizing barrier between your skin and the blades of the razor. Shaving on completely dry skin can create friction and irritation. “Lubricate your skin with soap, shaving cream, or shaving oil,” she says. “This will help the blades glide smoothly for a closer shave.” Keep in mind that soap may provide less lather or lubrication compared to a cream or oil.

When searching for a shaving cream or shaving oil, you should also be sure to scan the label to best suit your needs. “Some shaving creams can provide moisture that lasts after you’re done shaving,” Butler says. “If you have sensitive skin, look for a formula for sensitive skin [which] are sometimes unscented or were tested on sensitive skin.”

Start with clean blades

After you’ve selected your shaving oil or shaving cream, you’ll want to be sure that you’re working with a clean razor. “Change your razor blades every five or so shaves, and always check your blades for rust before using them,” Butler advises. “You can't get a smooth shave with dull blades.”

Dull blades can also be the reason for nicking the skin by causing you to unconsciously use more pressure as you attempt to get a close shave.

Shave in the right direction

It may seem like it goes without saying, but the direction in which you shave makes a difference. Butler says you should always aim to shave in the direction opposite of hair growth. “Look closely because hair can grow in different directions on your legs,” she says.

Remember to moisturize

Properly moisturizing after shaving can go a long way with keeping your skin smooth. “After shaving, apply a lotion right after the shower while skin is still damp,” Butler says. This helps lock in the moisture and keep your skin from drying out, which could cause irritation.
