There once was a time when wearing sneakers meant you went with the practical option, not the fashionable one. Then, the ballet sneaker appeared and completely changed that, fusing style and function and becoming the go-to option for chic, stylish celebrities and It Girls like Bella Hadid (who put the style on the map, IMO), Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicole Kidman.
Celebrity credits aside, the shoes are everywhere—TikTok, Instagram, and all over the streets of L.A. and NYC. Because finally, there’s a shoe that’s supportive, cool, and easy to style in a way that feels modern and fresh (beyond the many iterations of ballet flats we’ve seen in the past few years). The new It Girl sneaker has arrived, and I think you should make room in your summer wardrobe with the styles below.
Vivaia Carol Square-Toe Jogger Sneakerina
The first ballet sneaker to go viral, IMO, was the Vivaia Carol Sneakerina worn by Bella Hadid last summer. The slim sneaker has the appearance of a square-toe flat or jazz shoe, but has the supportive rubber sole of a sneaker.
Nike Air Rift Mesh Shoes
My personal favorite of the bunch is the Nike Air Rift shoes, worn by Jennifer Lawrence last winter (her spring pair of Salomon Marie Jeannie’s are constantly sold-out). These have a fashionable split-toe silhouette that elevates them far beyond just a regular pair of sneakers.
Adidas Taekwondo Mei Ballet Flats
If you want a ballet sneaker that you can easily slip on and hit the town, these aren’t for you. The laces add an extra stylish step that wraps up and around the ankle. They’re incredibly comfortable, though, and I can attest that the lace-up detail is not painful or blister-inducing.
Tigerida Mary Jane Sneakerina
I see this style constantly when I'm out in Los Angeles. There are so many rave reviews, too, with shoppers saying they "receive so many compliments” while wearing them and that they’re “so comfortable.”
Adidas Barreda Mary Jane Shoes
Get all the comfort and durability of an Adidas sneaker without the laces with this Barreda style. I’d wear these with a breezy white skirt and a graphic tee this summer.
Naturalizer Tallulah Sneaker
Ballet sneakers mold fashion and function, and this podiatrist-approved pair takes the extra step in making sure they’re actually good for your feet. These are made with breathable mesh and feature an extra-cushioned footbed.
