A hospital in Brisbane, Australia, has witnessed a birth as unusual as it is extraordinary. Jenitar Na'amoana, a 34-year-old woman, has given birth to four identical girls conceived naturally, a case that specialists consider practically unique due to its extreme rarity.
The girls were born via cesarean section on July 14th, when the pregnancy reached 28 weeks and four days of gestation. They are monozygotic quadruplets, a phenomenon that occurs when a single fertilized egg divides into four genetically identical embryos. Doctors following the case estimate that a pregnancy of this kind occurs in only one out of every 15 million pregnancies and highlight that the four babies shared the same placenta, an even more exceptional circumstance.
The news completely surprised the parents, Jenitar and Jortham Na'amoana, who already had four children before learning that their family was unexpectedly growing, as reported by the BBC.
The pregnancy was considered extremely high risk from the beginning. At 25 weeks of gestation, the mother was admitted to the Royal Brisbane Women's Hospital to remain under constant surveillance until the birth of the girls.
Obstetrician and maternal-fetal medicine specialist Alexa Bendall, who was responsible for monitoring the pregnancy, explained that the initial goal was to reach 28 weeks of gestation. Exceeding that milestone and achieving the birth of four healthy babies has been described by the medical team as an extraordinary outcome.
The newborns, named Emily, Harriet, Catherine, and Alexa —the latter in tribute to the doctor who accompanied the family throughout the process— are progressing favorably in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, where they will remain until they complete their development.
Meanwhile, the parents are facing a new reality as they go from four to eight children. To meet the needs of such a large family, they have launched a solidarity campaign with the goal of acquiring a vehicle with a capacity for ten people.
In the message shared with the initiative, Jenitar acknowledges that, although the birth of the girls has brought happiness to the entire family, simultaneously caring for four newborns poses a challenge they never imagined having to face.
While naturally conceived quadruplets are already a very rare phenomenon, specialists emphasize that cases of identical quadruplets like the Na'amoana sisters are even more extraordinary within the medical field.
