The Miami Marlins suffered their ninth consecutive loss Wednesday as the Houston Astros completed a three-game sweep with a 5-2 victory at Daikin Park.
Jeremy Pena opened the scoring with a solo home run in the third inning. The blast marked his third straight game with a homer, the first such streak of his career.
The Marlins tied the game in the fourth inning on run-scoring hits from Javier Sanoja and Joe Mack but did not score again.

The game remained tied until Yordan Alvarez delivered the decisive swing in the eighth inning. His two-run homer put the Astros ahead 4-2, and Isaac Paredes then added some insurance with a solo shot.

Peter Lambert limited Miami to two runs across six innings. Enyel De Los Santos, Steven Okert, and Bryan Abreu then combined for three scoreless innings to secure the win.
Sandy Alcantara allowed five runs and nine hits across seven innings. Although he kept the Marlins close for most of the night, Houston’s late power decided the finale.
The sweep gave the Astros some needed momentum before the August 3 trade deadline. Houston reached 50 wins and remains in the postseason hunt. The club sits third in the AL West, two games behind the first-place Texas Rangers after winning its fourth straight game.
For Miami, the loss extended the club’s season-long skid to nine games and dropped the club to 52-51. The Marlins sit tied for third in the National League East, eight games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves, as the trade deadline approaches.
