Astronomers have solved a 40-year mystery surrounding a giant structure once believed to rise from the center of the Milky Way. According to research published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, the feature is actually a much closer bubble of glowing gas shaped by stellar activity rather than a massive eruption from the galaxy’s core.
A Cosmic Illusion That Misled Astronomers For Decades
The Galactic center lobe became famous because of the way it appeared in observations of the Milky Way. Against the crowded background of the galactic center, the structure looked like a huge extension rising thousands of light-years above the galaxy’s central region.
Scientists proposed several explanations for its existence. Some suggested it could be the aftermath of supernova explosions, while others linked it to energetic activity from the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at the center of the Milky Way.
The uncertainty became so significant that researchers described the object as a kind of “Rorschach test” for galactic astrophysics, with different interpretations depending on how scientists viewed the available evidence.
The problem came from the extreme difficulty of studying the galactic center. This region contains enormous amounts of dust, stars, gas clouds, and overlapping structures that can make distant objects appear connected even when they are separated by thousands of light-years.
The lower portion of the structure was especially difficult to identify. Because it blended into the bright background of the galactic plane, earlier radio observations created the impression of an open feature extending away from the Milky Way’s core.
New Observations Reveal The Structure’s Real Location
The breakthrough came when researchers examined the object using data from the SDSS-V Local Volume Mapper survey, which creates detailed maps of glowing gas throughout the Milky Way.
Rather than relying only on radio observations, the team studied emissions from different types of gas, including ionized sulfur, which can pass through dusty regions more effectively than shorter wavelengths.
These observations revealed that the lower section of the structure was not missing. It was simply hidden by the complexity of the galactic environment.
By comparing the light from the gas with three-dimensional maps showing the distribution of dust across the Milky Way, scientists calculated that the bubble is located about 6,520 light-years from Earth.
That distance is dramatically different from the estimated 26,000 light-years separating Earth from the galactic center. The measurement means the structure is much smaller than previously believed and is not a massive feature extending from the heart of the galaxy.

A Giant Bubble Created By Stellar Activity
The newly identified structure is a vast cloud of hydrogen gas glowing under intense ultraviolet radiation. Instead of being produced by activity from the Milky Way’s center, scientists believe it was likely formed by massive stars born in a previous generation.
The researchers suggest that a group of powerful stars may have carved a cavity through surrounding material during their short lifetimes. These stars eventually ended their lives in supernova explosions, sending shock waves through nearby gas.
This process can create expanding bubbles in space. The edges of these bubbles often become brighter because newly formed stars or surviving massive stars emit radiation that causes the surrounding gas to glow.
From Earth, only the illuminated boundary is easily visible, creating the appearance of a loop rather than a complete three-dimensional structure.
The newly explained bubble measures around 115 light-years across, placing it in a similar category to other stellar structures such as Barnard’s Loop, a famous glowing arc of gas near the Orion constellation.
