Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son, Joseph Baena, aka Joe Baena, is following in his father’s footsteps, not necessarily in Hollywood. His career as a bodybuilder draws inspiration from the 7-time Mr. Olympia, continuing the discipline, transformation, and an intense connection with fitness that Arnold has been known for for years.
Recently, Baena has been in the spotlight after winning back-to-back professional bodybuilding competitions. In May, he earned 1st place in 3 divisions at the Natural Colorado State Championships. The divisions include: Men’s Classic Physique True Novice, Men’s Open Bodybuilding Heavyweight, and Men’s Classic Physique Novice. Surprisingly, it was Baena’s first professional competition.
Not only that, but Baena also made history within a week by earning his Pro Card after winning the Iron Gladiator competition in the Classic Physique division.
After that, questions about his next competition began to surface. During his conversation with Alex M. Guerra for a May 25 YouTube channel video, Baena revealed that he is preparing for a competition scheduled for “November or towards the end of the year. Like, six months.”
In the meantime, Baena continues to share his workout- and diet-related videos with his thousands of Instagram fans. On July 20, he shared another short clip showing his current shape and conditioning and flexing his muscles and holding legendary poses like his father.
Baena captioned the post, “Just checking in.”
Regarding his physique, the youngest son of Schwarzenegger takes inspiration from his father, but he does not copy his approach blindly.
So, Baena follows a 3-day workout split inspired by the old days of bodybuilding. The split looks like this:
- 1st day: chest and back
- 2nd day: arms and shoulders
- 3rd day: legs
- 4th day: rest and repeat.
While Baena is gaining attention in the bodybuilding world for his conditioning and physique, the question is when he realized he had an interest in fitness.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son Joe Baena opened up about the motivation behind his fitness
According to Hola, in an interview with GQ, when Baena was asked how he realized he had an interest in fitness, he said,
“My dad gave me the bodybuilding encyclopedia. I was flipping through that, trying to learn how to grow the biceps, and I fell in love with weightlifting.”
The son of Arnold added that that encyclopedia changed his mindset. He said, “I fell in love with eating healthy. I fell in love with learning about the body and how it reacts to training, and I became very passionate about it”.
Apart from that, in many instances, Baena has been seen training at Gold’s Gym under his father’s guidance.
Talking about training with his father, Baena said, “He’s the best training partner. I don’t know what to say. He pushes me. He makes sure that I don’t slack off in the gym. When the carbs are low, and the calories are low, and I start getting tired, he pumps me up.”
