New Jersey, home to many amazing restaurants, beaches and … castles?

Castlesy is a website dedicated to showcasing castles throughout the country, and sure enough, there are a handful right here in New Jersey.

The website admits it has a loose definition when defining a castle. While the U.S. castles may not resemble the exact architect of European structures built in the Middle Ages, the website argues the buildings highlighted have similar medieval architecture to the ancient ones overseas.

Each castle, in New Jersey and across the country, serves different purposes. Some castles are used for events such as weddings, others are part of universites and some are historic landmarks.

If you think Castlesy missed a castle somewhere in the country, the website encourages users to input their own recommendations.

Castlesy shows off six New Jersey castles, here is a brief description of each.

The Legacy Castle: Pompton Plains

This massive family-owned venue that was built in 2017 welcomes a plethora of events and ceremonies from weddings to large parties. The castle takes up about 25,000 square feet with 55-foot ceilings and can fit parties of 100 to 800 guests.

Inside is a spacious marble-induced environment with chandeliers, cylinders and paintings at every corner. Outside you can observe the garden scenery with a lake right next to the building. The venue’s website shows awards won for best wedding location. Guests can contact the owners on their website for booking and pricing.

Blair Hall: Princeton University

Princeton describes Blair Hall as a “gothic dormitory.” The castle-like education building was donated by university trustee and student John Insley Blair. He gave the funds for the dorm in 1896, and the building was finished in 1897. Blair contains what any traditional dorm would including single, double and quad rooms with a laundry, lounge and kitchen area.

Iviswold Castle, Felician University: Rutherford

This 19th century home-turned castle is located within Felician University as the college bought the structure in 1997. The building went through a $12 million renovation, and the university looks to continue to do work on the building. In 2019, the university partnered with the Heritage Consulting Group to preserve its historic landmark status while also hoping to have more renovations approved by the federal, state and local historic groups.

Kip’s Castle Park: Verona and Montclair

This medieval style mansion is owned by the Essex County Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. The brown stone building with a red roof contains 30 rooms. The Essex County website said the park provides a spectacular view of New York City. Permits to rent out the castle are available on the county website. The castle was built in the early 1900s.

The Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place, Monroe Township

This castle owned by Make-A-Wish New Jersey, is a unique spectacle with its bright array of colors of blue, purple and green on the outside to the children-friendly, fantasy environment on the inside. The castle is described on the Make-A-Wish website to have plenty of open space for children to wander and play in many rooms, some including stained glass windows of images such as wizards, dragons and unicorns.

“The special areas designated for the wish making experience are at the heart of the building, designed to stimulate the imagination and reveal the extraordinary possibilities of a wish when life is offering only escalating limitations,” as read on the Make-A-Wish homepage.

Opportunities to attend an event or bring a wish kid to the castle are available on the website.

Lambert Castle Museum, Paterson

The red-bricked building is in the heart of Paterson with an outlook of the entire city. The castle was built in 1892 by English immigrant Catholina Lambert who made a career in the silk industry, according to the city’s website. Inside the historic landmark there are plenty of rare paintinings and other artwork. The county-owned castle has been undergoing renovations since 2022, and it is currently closed to the public. The construction is expected to be completed in 2026.
