A source close to Angelina Jolie is speaking out after her daughter Vivienne filed a petition to legally drop “Pitt” from her last name.
“If people knew the whole truth, they would have more sympathy for the children and respect them,” the insider exclusively told People on July 22. “The fact they aren’t speaking ill or sharing things publicly only shows their decency.”
The source added, “Angie hasn’t been fighting and isn’t angry. She just wants everyone to heal.”
Vivienne, who turned 18 on July 12, filed the petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court on July 21.
According to court documents obtained by People, she is seeking to change her name from Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt to Vivienne Marcheline Jolie. The reason for the request is listed as “personal,” and a hearing for her petition is scheduled for November 2.
She joins her three older siblings—Shiloh, Maddox, and Zahara—who are all seeking to remove “Pitt” from their last names.
Shiloh’s petition was granted in 2024. Maddox, 24, filed his petition in May, and his hearing is set for September 14. Zahara, 21, filed hers in June, and her hearing is scheduled for September 28.
Neither Jolie nor Pitt has publicly commented on their children’s filings, but a source close to Pitt previously told People, “It’s sad to see someone repeatedly publicize their successful alienation of their children from the other parent.”
Jolie, 51, filed for divorce from Pitt, 62, in 2016, and their separation was finalized in 2024. In a June 17 interview with Variety, the actress made rare comments about her personal life.
“I think my fighting spirit is finally back,” Jolie said. “I lost it for a bit. I got kind of taken down a little bit, and it’s coming back in large part thanks to my children, who are now older, and encouraging it.”
She added, “My kids are almost all 18, so now they want to see me traveling the world, they want me to get out and do things. They know me more than anybody, and they still like me, which says a lot. I think they’re very encouraging of me kind of getting back to aspects of myself that maybe I hadn’t felt as free to do.”
