An American Airlines passenger is playing the victim card, after he claims he was tricked into swapping seats with another person in the business class cabin. He thought he was just doing a nice deed by switching seats, but as it turns out, that other seat was actually broken, and wouldn't recline.
If you watch his video once, you might totally side with him, and think the other passenger is a completely unreasonable jerk. However, there's a lot more to this story, it would appear. Actually, I think he's the one acting out of line here, and I'm shocked he wasn't kicked off the flight. Let me explain…
A strange American business class seat swap confrontation
A video is going viral on Instagram, regarding an incident that reportedly happened on July 21, 2026, on American flight AA171, from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX), operated by one of the carrier's Airbus A321XLRs with flat beds.
The video posted online shows the passenger talking to the camera, explaining that it's 6AM, and that he's "getting in a fight" in the first class section (minor point, but it's actually business class). He claims that he was half asleep, and that a woman woke him up, and asked him to switch seats.
Since all seats in the cabin are the same, he agreed, figuring that maybe she wanted to sit next to a travel companion, or preferred the view on one side of the plane. However, he then discovered that the reason for the swap request was that her seat doesn't actually recline. At that point she was in his seat, and refused to get out of it.
He then walked up to her and films her, saying "you gotta get out of my seat, this is crazy." She responds "you were moved, sir," to which he responds "my boarding pass says 6A, yours says 3F." She can then finally be seen getting up and leaving the seat, and he talks about how he got his seat back. When he's back in his seat, the guy across from him says "bro, you almost got robbed, bro."
The traveler provides the following context in the video description (I just added some line breaks, to make it easier to follow):
I fly very very often strictly on American Airlines so I have high loyalty status. I genuinely love AA. Flight from JFK to LAX at 6AM. I ALWAYS book a normal cabin seat because there's usually a 90% chance I get FREE UPGRADES. It's the best. Fortunately for me on this flight, FREE UPGRADE. Seat 6A. I guess the woman in 3F's chair wouldn't recline so she complained to the flight attendants that because SHE PAID & I was there cus of an UPGRADE, she is entitled to me being REQUIRED to trade with her.
I understand the logic, but that doesn't mean I agree with it. When I get on early AM flights, I don't sleep prior so I can knock out the second I sit down & wake up at the destination. Feels like IRL teleporting. When I was woken up after boarding / buckling up, I was in a daze. I thought the lady wanted to trade seats because she wanted a view of the city out the window or it's sentimental, I don't know!
I was down to do it for reasons like that, but when I was told it's cus she didn't like her chair, no thank you! She didn't even say please or thank you! Just bolted over to my chair & wouldn't get up. Even if she was polite about it maybe I would've said whatever just take it I'm feeling nice. Sadly not the case. She started telling everyone that SHE PAID and I DIDN'T so I have to move. Also shout out to the random passenger in 1st (not shown in this vid) that came up to me saying "Are you really not going to trade with her? You're a dick" – Yet… He didn't offer to trade her either lol.
There's more to this, and the guy is likely in the wrong
If you watch the above video quickly, you'd obviously make the conclusion that this woman was being unreasonable, dishonest, and rude, and was trying to trick this passenger with a seat swap.
However, the second time I watched the video, I noticed how the woman claimed "you were moved, sir," which is very different than a claim that she somehow asked him to swap seats, without disclosing the issue. For that matter, there's the point about how she claims that she paid for the seat, while he was upgraded. How would she have known that he was upgraded?
The thing is, this guy actually sort of incriminates himself in a follow-up video, when he provides more background on what happened. In the below video, the guy explains that one of the flight attendants hit him with an ultimatum. He could either switch seats, be downgraded to his original seat, or take a different flight.
Okay, so this is actually a very different story. If a seat is inoperable before takeoff, it's completely standard airline policy (as it should be) for the last person to be upgraded to be downgraded to their original seat, and for those who paid for the premium cabin seats to get a functioning seat. That seems fair, right?
I suspect what happened here is that once the crew was made aware of the seat issue, they informed the gate agent of the situation, and the gate agent decided which passenger should be downgraded, based on their priority, and that was then communicated.
What's actually shocking here is that this passenger somehow bullied his way back into the original seat, all while recording another passenger (in violation of airline policy), and then fully getting away with it?
Bottom line
An American Airlines business class passenger claims he was asked to swap seats with another business class passenger. He claims he agreed because he figured she just wanted to sit next to someone, or wanted a certain view, only for him to then discover that the seat was broken.
However, it appears that there's more to this story. The man had been upgraded last minute while the woman had paid, and the flight attendant reportedly gave him an ultimatum of either swapping seats, being downgraded, or being removed from the flight, which is the correct protocol in such a situation (frustrating as it is).
Yet somehow he managed to just bulldoze his way back into his original business class seat, even putting this woman on blast on camera. I'm shocked he wasn't removed from the flight for just going up to someone, filming them, and forcing them to switch seats.
It's entirely possible this woman did absolutely nothing wrong. The crew probably told her, "hey, you're going to move to seat 6A," as it's not like she would've independently arrived at that conclusion.
