Alex Ovechkin will play another season for the Washington Capitals.
Anything beyond that remains a mystery, even to him.
Washington recently signed its longtime captain to a one-year contract for the 2026-27 season. When Ovechkin was asked whether it would be his final year in the NHL, he offered little help by saying he may play one, or potentially two more years.
That answer gives Ovechkin the freedom to make his decision when he is ready. It also creates an awkward problem for the Capitals and every other team hoping to recognize one of hockey’s greatest players before he leaves.

Ovechkin has no obligation to decide his future several months before the season begins.
He may want to see how his body responds at 41. Perhaps Washington’s performance will influence him. Another playoff run could convince him to return, while a difficult season might tell him it is finally time to walk away.
The Capitals certainly aren’t treating him like a ceremonial player. Ovechkin scored 26 goals last season, bringing his regular-season total to 923. He also became only the second player in NHL history to reach 1,000 combined regular-season and playoff goals.
His new contract reflects his continued value. Ovechkin will receive a $1 million salary and a $3.25 million signing bonus. He can collect another $4.75 million simply by appearing in 10 games, potentially bringing the deal’s total value to $9 million.
This is not Washington handing out a souvenir check. The Capitals expect him to produce.
The NHL could lose its chance to say goodbye
There is another side to Ovechkin’s uncertainty.
If he waits until the season ends to retire, opposing teams may never get an opportunity to honor him. Capitals fans would not know they were watching his final home game. Road crowds could miss their last chance to recognize a player who changed how goals are scored and celebrated.
The NHL has seen what a proper farewell can become. When a legendary player announces his plans early enough, every road appearance carries additional significance. Tributes are prepared, fans arrive early and former teammates occasionally appear.
Without an announcement, Ovechkin’s final season would look like any other until it suddenly wasn’t.
Perhaps that is exactly what he wants. Ovechkin has never seemed interested in turning his career into a traveling retirement ceremony. His focus has usually remained on scoring goals, winning games and enthusiastically throwing himself into teammates during celebrations.
Still, his retirement will be larger than Washington. Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s career goals record, something that once appeared almost untouchable. Hockey deserves an opportunity to recognize what it witnessed.
Washington cannot force the decision
The Capitals can privately ask Ovechkin about his plans, but they cannot place a deadline on a franchise icon.
They also cannot market the season as his final ride without his permission. Doing so would create unnecessary pressure and could become rather embarrassing if he returned in 2027-28.
For now, Washington must prepare for two possibilities. This could be the closing chapter of Ovechkin’s career, or merely another season before the actual goodbye begins.
Ovechkin has spent two decades making goaltenders uncomfortable.
Now, he is doing the same thing to everyone waiting for an answer.
