Fans of David Muir have said Donald Trump "can't get over it" after the ABC host's weekend replacement shared a major update on the show.
Whit Johnson, 44, anchored the July 18 broadcast of ABC World News Tonight, filling in for weeknight anchor David, 52, during the weekend segment. One of the stories he shared was that ahead of the midterm elections, a federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. had paused a ruling that blocked a mail ballot restriction.
The TV host said, "President Trump is focusing on election integrity, with just over 100 days before voters head to the polls for the midterms, and a new appeals court ruling on mail-in voting changes." The new ruling came just weeks after the Supreme Court ruled that states may count mail-in ballots received after Election Day, rejecting a challenge supported by the Trump administration.
It comes after Muir posted a rare snap of his 'special companion' as he dropped an admission after his ABC absence.

Whit then introduced a report by his colleague Steven Portnoy, who described the ruling as "a temporary victory for the Trump administration in its effort to restrict voting by mail."
The reporter said, "A three-judge appeals court panel in D.C. pausing a lower-court order that blocked the Postal Service from moving forward with plans to only deliver mail-in ballots to approved voters on lists submitted by state."
Steven shared, "But that rule still held up in federal court in Massachusetts." The report included a clip of President Trump describing mail-in ballots as "inherently corrupt."
The journalist continued, "Trump, who himself voted by mail, now urges Congress to require voters to send in copies of their ID with their ballots. Other parts of what Republicans call the Save America Act would require voters to prove their citizenship when registering and force states to turn their voter rolls over to the federal government."
However, Steven noted that GOP leaders have said they don't have the votes to get the Act through the Senate. He also added that there are "new questions" about the administration's claim that more than a quarter of a million non-citizens are registered to vote in four states.
After the ABC report was shared on social media, many viewers shared their thoughts on the news story. One wrote on Instagram, "All because one man lost an election and can't get over it." Another said, "A federal judge will block this."
A third commented, "Mail in or not we still coming out in droves to vote!" Someone else added, "I am so sick of the corruption of this regime!" One more shared, "So when he wins, it's fair.… When he loses, it's rigged. Got it!"
On Thursday this week, Trump used a primetime address to the nation to elevate his yearslong push to cast doubt on the legitimacy of US elections and dispute his 2020 loss, in an appeal for more restrictive voting laws ahead of the midterms.
Trump's amplification of debunked theories about the election six years ago and his inability to accept his loss led to one of the darkest moments in American history when a mob of his supporters led a violent attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, in the final days of his first term.
"America is back and doing really well, but we still have a major challenge that must be urgently addressed, because no country can be great without fair and honest elections," he said on Thursday.
However, Democrats warned that Trump was trying to revive false claims of past stolen elections in order to delegitimize the 2026 midterm elections, in which Trump's Republican Party is facing headwinds.
