The World Wide Web address turns 41 this year. DNS.pizza has analyzed 85,879 domains with verified registration dates and ranked the oldest active domains.
The DNS "opened for business in 1985," the site notes: nordu.net, a Nordic research network, was created on January 1, and symbolics.com - the address of a long-defunct Lisp-machine company - became the first registered .com on March 15 that year.
Between those two pioneers, a cluster of Swedish universities registered on January 17, 1985, all beating the first .com to the punch.
The chart plots registrations by year on a square-root scale so the slow-moving early years don't vanish next to the dot-com boom.
