Hollywood couldn’t have come up with a script better than this: a real-life emergency physician in Houston, Texas, inspired by Batman to help people and save lives, who drives around in a fully street-legal Batmobile to complete the picture. Based on Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman starring Michael Keaton, the replica stretches around 22 feet long and is fully road legal. Detailed in a video by Daily Driven Exotics, it features working headlights, indicators, heat, air conditioning, and rear-view cameras. Most importantly, it’s got a turbocharged LS V8 under the hood, with the owner claiming anything from 500-1,000 horsepower with side-exit exhausts, making sure people hear this Batmobile before they spot this real-life Batman coming.
Rebuilding A Hollywood Icon
The owner purchased the unfinished project, who had completed much of the bodywork. From there, he and his team rebuilt the suspension, brakes, and virtually every mechanical system before putting the car back on the road. Of course, they ended up blowing the first engine, as these things tend to go. The team then started over with a Chevrolet LS V8 and a massive turbocharger slapped on. Despite its size, the owner says it's surprisingly easy to drive, although the massive rear bodywork means visibility depends almost entirely on three onboard cameras. The Batmobile, unsurprisingly, gets a lot of attention. It isn’t every day you see a Batmobile, parked in a museum or otherwise. It certainly isn’t every day you see one of the most iconic Batmobiles driving down the road alongside regular traffic like it’s just another commute.
Batmobiles Have Become Big Business
Across the Batman universe, the bubble-canopy Lincoln Futura from the Adam West era gave way to Tim Burton's impossibly long, jet-inspired Batmobile in 1989, before Joel Schumacher introduced the neon-lit versions driven by Val Kilmer and George Clooney. Christopher Nolan reinvented the concept as the military-inspired Tumbler, while The Batman (2022) took Bruce Wayne back to basics with a heavily modified muscle car.
Batmobiles are already sought-after Hollywood memorabilia, and original movie cars have reached stratospheric prices. One of the five original Batmobiles built for the 1960s Batman television series sold at auction for $4.62 million in 2013, making it one of the most valuable TV cars ever sold. Original movie cars remain almost impossible to buy, which is exactly why high-end replicas have developed a loyal following. For lifelong Batman fans, building one is often the only realistic way to own a piece of Gotham, even if it means creating a 1,000-horsepower version from scratch.
