The future of transportation isn’t just electric, it’s transportable and deployable. The XPENG ARIDGE Land Craft Carrier is less matryoshka doll and more kangaroo, storing the company’s flying car, the A868 high-speed, long-range, full tilt-rotor flying car.
The duo is designed to be sold one unit that combines the six-wheeled, plug-in hybrid mothership-like van with a detachable vertical take-off and landing (eVOTL) aircraft that has its home in the rear of the auto.
The classification of eVOTLs includes multicopter, lift and cruise, and tilt-rotor aircraft. They are expected to be used for personal, commercial and cargo air travel in the decades to come.
The A868 is designed for low-altitude human transport. It seats two and is operated via a joystick. ARIDGE CEO Tan Wang told Newsweek last year that it takes just five minutes to learn how to fly the 4-ton aircraft, which is part drone, part helicopter.
It can be stored in the van as well as deployed from it. This opens up deployment to virtually anywhere a van can go as a take-off/touch down destination. ARIDGE is also opening static so-called “flight camps” that serve this purpose, working with partners to rapidly build out hundreds of these bases across China.
ARIDGE’s success is deeply dependent on AI. “I strongly believe the AI is not just the digital capability. Also, AI is the core infrastructure behind all the AI cars, flying cars, robotics, and all the mobility ecosystem,” Wang told Newsweek.
The intersection of AI and air mobility has become even more important in recent years with the kick off of the low-altitude economy in 2024. Low-altitude refers to aerospace below 1000 meters.
It’s part of XPENG’d larger AI-for-all strategy that sees the technology as the backbone of mobility of the future, all while making relatively affordable projects. “Our vision is simple: to let all the ordinary people freedom to fly,” Wang said.
As of today, however, the A868 is not particularly affordable. The Land Carrier alone is around $280,000.
Wang laid out the company’s three-stage development process that gets eVOTLs closer to everyman vehicles and true flying cars saying, “I think the flying cars should not arrive all at once. That’s why we have a clear three-step strategy. The first step is the limited scenarios, and the second is the typical scenarios, and the third one is full three-dimensional door-to-door transportation [that] integrates the capability both flying in the air and driving on the ground into one car.”
The eVOTL market is expected to boom in the next decade, particularly ramping up in the second half of the 2030s. A Boston Consulting Group white paper projects that by 2040, China’s eVOTL market will be valued at around $23 billion USD with more than 90% of that value coming from private ownership.
“I believe that this will be the one of the major engine growth engine currency in in the world globally, not just in China,” Wang said.
