Not every PC builder will populate every single one of their motherboard headers, and that's usually okay. It wasn't until recently when I noticed that this standard checklist has a blind spot while building another PC, especially when I found that there was a particular nine-pin block that almost always went unaccounted for. This is a USB 2.0 header, and as useful as it is, not many builders make use of it.
The USB 2.0 header is one of the oldest connectors on your motherboard
Manufacturers are adding more of them in 2026, and it's no surprise
If you only read about it, you'll find that a USB 2.0 header feels sort of like a lingering antique. It has a 480Mbps ceiling that is dwarfed next to the 20Gbps Type-C ports on the rear I/O panel, and modern boards like the ROG Crosshair X870E Glacial have dropped USB 2.0 from that panel altogether. If you evaluate your ports only on the basis of bandwidth, this port has no reason to exist, much less to be used.
And yet, the opposite seems to be happening. Newer boards from a variety of manufacturers are shipping with more of these headers, and as an example, the Crosshair X870E Glacial announced in January 2026 now has three USB 2.0 headers up from two in the last generation seen in X670E Extreme. The Dark Hero, ROG Strix Neo, and TUF Gaming Neo boards all seem to be following the pattern as well. The reason for this is the fact that enthusiasts have now come to use this port in some rather interesting ways. Well, at least the ones who know about it!
The USB 2.0 doesn't offer the raw bandwidth that would please most users, but it is a standardized, plug-and-play way for a computer to communicate with a wide range of devices, and a lot of peripherals need exactly that to function beautifully. A lot of newer consumer devices have been added to the list over time, and nothing cheaper or simpler has come along to replace them.

For both utility and aesthetics, pick what you fancy
Perhaps the most common claimant for this port is already on your parts list. AIO coolers that come with a screen on the pump block have become increasingly common (and I daresay, more affordable) within the $160–$190 range. Almost all of these like ASUS's Ryujin series, NZXT Kraken (which I use myself) or Corsair's iCue Link lineup can make use of an internal USB 2.0 connection to display GIFs, videos, and live data such as CPU temps, CPU clock frequencies, GPU temps, and even fun GIFs and videos. The ARGB headers handle the lighting, but to use the screen, you'll find yourself looking for a USB 2.0.
If you've got an RGB build, there's a long list of devices that can utilize it, especially now that the software-controlled ecosystems supporting these devices have become common. Fan hubs and RGB controllers from Lian Li's L-Connect, Corsair and its iCUE ecosystem, and NZXT's CAM need the header to manage lighting arrays, which in turn, need a data channel to the header. Certain power supply units like Corsair i-series units also use the header to report real-time wattage figures.
But it gets even more interesting
Sensor panels, hidden dongles, and the home lab connection you never thought of
Some of the newer use cases have demonstrated rather stunning ways the header can be put to use. Builders aiming for an ultra-modern look seem to be adding mini displays to their desktops for always-on system monitoring, and since these sensor panels connect over USB, often straight to a USB 2.0 header, they can be used to power temperature and clock-speed monitors that update a few times per second. For this particular use case, 480Mbps is actually quite overkill.
If you wish to go even further, a cheap header-to-Type-A adapter can turn the header into a USB port inside the case as well, which is useful for devices you never want to expose (or ones that are quite unsightly). I think of license dongles, or for the home-server crowd, a Zigbee coordinator dongle that lets a Home Assistant box run an entire smart home network locally. On the off chance that you find that the two headers your motherboard shipped with are already in use, fret not, as a simple USB 2.0 splitter cable or a dedicated hub can fix that part of the problem for you.
An underrated port comes with a hundred possibilities
The USB 2.0 header is something I'd known of and unwittingly used in some of my builds, but it wasn't until perhaps the fifth or the sixth until I realized that it changed what is possible with my rig. With nothing but a wired connection, I can hook up a display that's mesmerizing to look at or add a device that improves its functionality in a way I would never have unlocked if I didn't decide to look into it. I'd certainly be taking a further look at the motherboard headers before I close the side panel for good next, before I assume the build is completed.
