We’ve Reached the End of Political Accountability

I’m baffled that the GOP keeps getting away with nominating people like Andy Biggs—who allegedly helped plan the “Stop the Steal” rally—for major offices.

On Tuesday night, Representative Andy Biggs won the Republican nomination for governor of Arizona, easily defeating Representative David Schweikert, about whom I know nothing and now, alas, I have no need to know anything.

Here is something someone once said about Congressman Biggs: “Mr. Biggs did.”

That was former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson, talking in a video testimony with members of the January 6 special committee regarding members of Congress who inquired about presidential pardons for their activities during the insurrection. Biggs has denied asking for the pardon, but he was a leader in the congressional move not to certify Joe Biden’s election in 2020. There was testimony that Biggs was involved in planning the “Stop the Steal” movement that included farcical plans to produce fake slates of “alternative electors” in crucial states.

Now Andy Biggs is even money to be the next governor of Arizona.

It is altogether remarkable how little accountability has been parceled out for an attempt to overthrow the government. The shock troops all got a blanket pardon. There have been passing few politicians who have paid any price at the polls; Matt Gaetz would still be in the House if the president hadn’t nominated him for attorney general. Back when we were pretty sure he was alive, Mitch McConnell could’ve ended the president’s political career if he’d only allowed his caucus to vote for the second impeachment resolution, which was centered on the insurrection.

Now we’ve got a congressional investigation into January 6 based on a fantastical theory that, somehow, the FBI was behind it with the help of Antifa. And we have conservatives tossing around the word insurrection in relation to their own fantasies about how the Democratic party “imported” millions of foreigners to vote for Biden.

We are in the hands of the madmen.

It comes after the U.S. carried out eleven straight days of strikes against Iran, and the two countries appear farther apart than ever on reaching an agreement since talks crumbled. “From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile,...
