The Kansas City Royals cannot escape the injury bug this season.
They were dealt another blow Tuesday evening when right-fielder Jac Caglianone exited with right-shoulder soreness before the sixth inning of a home game against the San Francisco Giants.
Caglianone attempted to make a diving grab in the bottom of the fifth inning at Kauffman Stadium. He raced towards the right-field line to corral a fly ball off the bat of Giants catcher Jesus Rodriguez.
The 23-year-old came up short. He hit the ground hard but finished out the rest of the inning.
“It wasn’t going to bother him that much on defense,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said postgame. “It was more when he was going to have to try to swing.”
The Royals allowed two runs in the fifth. And when it was time to return defensively for the sixth, Caglianone was replaced in the field. Starling Marte moved over to right field and Isaac Collins came in to play left field.
“We’re just going to have to check it out and see what it looks like,” Quatraro said.
Caglianone became the latest KC player to depart early from a game. On Monday shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. exited after experiencing tightness in his lower back. He is considered day-to-day.
“They’re in there checking it out now, and we’ll see what they say,” Quatraro said.
Caglianone has improved significantly this season. He entered Tuesday’s game hitting .260 with 16 home runs and 37 RBIs. He competed in the 2026 Home Run Derby last week during Major League Baseball’s All-Star festivities.
The Royals are currently missing multiple players. Former All-Star pitchers Cole Ragans, Kris Bubic and Carlos Estévez, among others, are on the shelf.
Pitcher Stephen Kolek will seek a second opinion on his strained right flexor, and outfielder Kyle Isbel is on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha.
