One person is dead, and another was injured after a shooting Tuesday evening at a home in Smithville, police said in a post on social media.
Officers responded around 6 p.m. to a report of shots fired at a home on Sunflower Street in the northern part of Smithville.
There, the person who reported the gunfire said they heard a loud noise coming from a neighbor’s home. The person also found damage from a bullet strike inside a bedroom, police said.
Officers went to the neighboring home, where they found two people who had been shot. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police also took a person into custody, who was being held in the Clay County jail while police continue their investigation. Police said they were not looking for any additional suspects.
The killing is Smithville’s first homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star.
The Smithville Police Department, with assistance from the Kansas City Police Department, is investigating the killing.
