With fewer than five months to go before Avengers: Doomsday hits movie theaters, Marvel Studios is giving fans their largest glimpse at Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom yet in a new trailer for the movie.
On Monday, July 20, Marvel Studios released its first trailer for the new Avengers movie, which features Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor speaking to the newly assembled Avengers, telling them to work together so the previous, now-deceased Avengers did not lose their lives in vain.
The trailer also shows short footage of Thor and Doctor Doom battling it out one-on-one, and it seems Doom easily has the upper hand against the Asgardian.
Chris Evans‘ Steve Rogers — a.k.a. Captain America — also appears in the trailer’s final moments, much to Thor’s amazement. Evans, 45, and Downey Jr., 61, both return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after their standout characters died or moved on at the end of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Details regarding Avengers: Doomsday — most notably, Downey Jr.’s return to the franchise as the villain Doctor Doom — were first announced during Marvel Studios’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024.
Now, two years later, fans have a solid idea of what other characters make up the Avengers’ lineup for the new movie. Doomsday will feature the casts of MCU’s Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts movies, both released in 2025, as well as returning MCU stars Anthony Mackie, Danny Ramirez, Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Simu Liu.
Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer and James Marsden, who costarred in the X-Men movies throughout the 2000s and 2010s, will also reprise their roles. Channing Tatum also features in the movie’s cast as Gambit, the character whom he notably portrayed in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine years after his solo movie was canceled.
