Iberdrola-owned (IBDSF) (IBDRY) Scottish Power said Wednesday it plans to spend £1.5B (~$2B) ‌to upgrade old turbines at the Whitelee Windfarm in Scotland, which would nearly double capacity at Britain's largest onshore windfarm.

The upgrade would replace the 215 existing turbines at Whitelee with 124 larger turbines, raising the project's capacity to ~1 GW, enough electricity to power 650K homes.

The project is expected to start ~2030 and be complete by 2035, and Scottish Power CEO Keith Anderson told Reuters in an interview that the company "will repower it in sections over that period of time, and that means we still get the best out of the existing site as we start building the new site."

The project announcement came after parent company Iberdrola (IBDSF) (IBDRY) reported a 22% rise in H1 net profit to €4.34B (~$4.95B), exceeding analyst consensus expectations.

H1 net profit excluding capital gains from the sale of thermal power plants in Mexico to Spain's Cox group rose 8%, while adjusted EBITDA increased 7% to €8.05B.
