A former Lynn and Lowell teacher was arraigned Wednesday on charges related to raping a 14-year-old Lynn middle school student, the Essex County District Attorney’s Office announced.

Tymond Tran, 38, of Hudson, New Hampshire, pleaded not guilty in Essex County Superior Court to rape of a child aggravated by an age difference of 10 years or more, indecent assault and battery on a person 14 or over, exhibiting a child in the nude and distributing obscene material to a minor.

The charges stem from crimes committed during the 2023-2024 school year while Tran was an eighth-grade teacher at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Lynn, prosecutors said.

In 2022, while Tran was still teaching at the school, Amazon named Tran an Amazon Future Engineer Teacher of the Year. The ten teachers selected from across the U.S. were honored for promoting diversity and inclusion in computer science and robotics.

When Tran was charged, he was employed as a teacher at Lowell Community Charter Public School, WCVB reported. The school said in a statement that it fired Tran after the district attorney’s office informed them of the charges. Tran also passed all required background checks, the school said.

During Tran’s arraignment, the judge ordered numerous conditions for his release, including that he wear a GPS location monitor, stay in his home with limited exceptions, have no unsupervised contact with minors, submit to random electronic device searches and stay away from victims in the case, prosecutors said.

Tran is due back in court for a pretrial conference on Aug. 26.
