NEED TO KNOW

  • Nicolas Winding Refn says Charles Melton told him his “body has never looked” as “amazing” as in Her Private Hell
  • The star confirmed this and revealed he ate two foods to maintain his physique for the upcoming movie
  • Melton stars in Her Private Hell, Refn’s first film in a decade, as Private K alongside Sophie Thatcher

Charles Melton had an unusual diet while filming Her Private Hell.

At a New York City screening of Nicolas Winding Refn’s surreal new sci-fi thriller, the Danish filmmaker revealed that the 35-year-old actor told him his body looks the best it ever has in the film. Melton agreed — and revealed that he relied on two surprising foods to sustain his physique.

Speaking to a small crowd at the Roxy Cinema before the screening on Tuesday, July 14, Refn, 55, said that “when Charles saw the film before we went to Cannes with it, where it premiered, he said something very interesting to me,” which was “in a way, one of the best [compliments] I’ve ever had.”

“He said, ‘Nick, my body has never looked that amazing,’ ” The Neon Demon auteur continued, drawing laughter from the audience.

Melton then appeared before the same crowd. “Thanks, Nick. It’s true,” the actor admitted, before revealing that he snacked on two things to maintain the toned physique required of his Her Private Hell character, a soldier named Private K or just “Kay.”

“I ate so many cherry tomatoes and tuna while filming this film,” he said. “And I’m never going to eat that again.”

Both Melton and Refn also shared excitement over the project — which marks the filmmaker’s first feature in a decade, as well as his first since a harrowing brush with death — at the N.Y.C. screening.

“But it was incredible,” Melton told the audience. “As you guys know, Nicolas Winding Refn, I mean, he is an auteur of cinema. He has his imprint in cinema and to be a part of his work in this world and his first movie since dying was a gift. And I’m really excited for you guys to experience it.”

Refn also revealed at the event that Melton was cast in Her Private Hell — which also stars Sophie Thatcher, Havana Rose Liu and Kristine Froseth — after he watched the actor’s long-running teen drama during a father-daughter watch party of sorts.

After “a year of casting,” during which he “couldn’t find Private K,” the filmmaker said he “was sitting with my youngest daughter on a deal of, ‘I watch something, she watches something.’ And so, she wanted me to watch Riverdale.”

“It was a great show, by the way,” he continued. “It’s a very good show. I showed her Twin Peaks and said, ‘This is where it comes from.’ So there was a season in the ‘50s that she showed me, and suddenly, this guy comes on screen, and he had really beautiful hair and a leather jacket.”

“And I said, ‘That’s him. That’s the guy in my movie.’ I needed to get him out of the television and into my movie,” Refn recalled.

Her Private Hell opens in theaters July 24.
